British and Japanese actress and singer Rina Sawayama started her career as a singer with the single Sleeping in Waking in 2013. She is a multi-talented artist as she doesn’t limit herself to a single field. Besides being a melodious singer and talented actor, she is also a model signed to Anti-Agency and Elite Model Management.

Sawayama’s parents moved to London from Japan when she was 5 years old. Consequently, for the first few years, the Tunnel Vision singer struggled with communicating in English with her peers and teachers. Slowly, she began to establish a connection with others through music. No wonder she chose to be a pop artist.

Rina Sawayama Refuses to Be Put into Boxes

The B-side of the 7-inch vinyl of Rina Sawayama’s first single Sleeping in Waking had the song Who. That same year, she released the single Terror on Halloween under the stage name, Rina. She had considered going by her first name alone in the very beginning. Her days as a 5-year-old in a British school where everyone would butcher her surname was the reason why she contemplated it. In an interview in 2021, she said:

“I’ve always been conscious that my surname is an inconvenience. I would be in floods of tears. That anxiety of someone trying to say my last name as a 5-year-old was the most excruciating thing.”

Over the years, with each new song inspired by each negative remark about her race, her queerness, or the way she showcases her personal struggles in her music, Sawayama has grown into a pop artist that cannot be held back by any conventions.
