James Caan, 82 years old, has passed away. The actor is most well known for playing the role of Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, the son for whom Vito Corleone uttered the iconic line, “Look how they massacred my boy!”

The news of the actor’s death was revealed by a tweet from James Caan’s official Twitter account.

The tweet, posted on the actor’s official Twitter handle said,

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

End of tweet.”

The cause of death was not revealed in the tweet.

James was a bulwark when it came to cinema, having acted in various notable roles across a span of 60 years. His film career boasts of movies like The Godfather, Misery, and Elf. He has also been nominated four times for the Golden Globe nominations. He has also been nominated for an Emmy and an Oscar.

Apart from his on-screen performances, Caan is known for his partying lifestyle. The actor was killing it, both on and off the screen, before deciding abruptly to call it quits in the late 80s.

After the actor’s death was announced, tributes have started to pour in. Rob Reiner, the director of Caan in Misery tweeted,

 “So sorry to hear the news. I loved working with him. And the only Jew I knew who could calf rope with the best of them. Love to the family.”

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn also tweeted:

Rest In Peace James Caan. There are so many movies of his I love.”

American actor Andy Richter tweeted,

RIP James Caan. Shocked. Was lucky enough, after a lifetime of loving his work, to get to work with him and I loved him as a person even more. Funny, warm, self-deprecating, and effortlessly talented. They say never meet your heroes, but he proved that to be very very wrong.”

English broadcaster, journalist, writer, and television personality, Piers Morgan, tweeted,

“RIP James Caan, 82. 

Brilliant actor – loved him as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather, such a ferocious, menacing, magnificent performance. Met him once at a party in LA and he was a very funny & highly entertaining man. Sad news.”

The actor will be sorely missed.
