However, a new post from MyTimeToShineHello suggests that the actor has agreed to reprise his role as Iron Man again. Maybe that’s why the creators couldn’t hand over Tony Stark’s place to any other acclaimed superhero in the universe. Iron Man’s departure was undeniably a bitter pill to swallow especially for the ones who delved into the MCU as a fan after Iron Man’s arrival. But his departure is also considered one of the best send-offs for a fictional character in recent years. Joanna Robinson the co-author of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios recently shed light on putting Robert Downey Jr. back as Iron Man and whether are there any chances and how it would turn out to be. Robinson doubts the actor’s comeback as the massive success of Christopher Nolan in which Robert Downey Jr. played Lewis Strauss, could land him an Oscar nomination for  Best Supporting Actor which could affect his return to his MCU roots as Iron Man. In the Phase Zero podcast, she said:

“Between Downey and Evans, I would have said before Downey because once you get into the later chapters you find out that Downey didn’t want to be killed off in Endgame and was sort of ‘no thank you.’ You would expect that he would be one of the easiest calls to get him back.”

Robinson talks about bringing back Downey Jr. isn’t a hard nut to crack as he initially never wanted to end Iron Man’s arc. As it was important for the MCU to move out of the shadow of Iron Man, his departure was necessary. The author added:

“I mean, a lot of money, but also a phone call. But Downey, I think is about to win an Oscar for Oppenheimer so I think that changed the calculus a bit in terms of how ready he is to be Tony Stark again.”

Robinson explains her doubts about the actor’s return as his performance in Oppenheimer has indisputably changed the calculus of how ready Doweny Jr. is to step again into the superhero world as the actor himself revealed in an interview with The New York Times, that he desires to focus in other projects. However, Tony Stark’s legacy will always be a part of the franchise, and should come up with a new identity that’s not crafted by it.
