Ryan Gosling, who’s basking in Barbie’s success, recently got on the internet’s wrong side. In one of the videos, he was seen brushing off Simu Liu, his co-star from the movie, while they were posing for the press at one of the events. Things got awkward, and the internet took care of the rest.

Comment after comment started pouring, and Gosling was called out as rude. Some even questioned if he beat the Marvel star Liu and other Ken stars after the trainer-on-set David Higgins jokingly made some claims. What’s interesting here is that the competition, or rather this Kenergy, was seen on the movie’s set too. Truth be told, a little competition that took place off-screen made its way to the film.

Simu Liu Could Not Beat Ryan Gosling At The Gym

While shooting Barbie, working out together was the best place for brewing competition amidst Kens. Higgins fuelled up the Kenergy by the introduction of challenges. From who could do the most push-ups and pull-ups to who could hold the plank longest, it was a part of the training regime.

Ryan Gosling, who’s an A-list actor, didn’t opt out of the bonding ritual. In fact, David Higgins said that Ryan got involved. He then joked that Gosling was going to easily beat the male co-stars in a fitness battle and by the looks of it, he was not bluffing. The La La Land star did win the pull-up challenge.

In talks with Men’s Health, Simu Liu admitted,

“I could not beat Ryan to the gym. He was always there earlier than me and he always stayed later. It just speaks to the discipline that this guy has, and I think it really pays off in the movie. He’s got a couple scenes where you get to see a bit of that Ken body, and it’s pretty shredded.”

All this intense work ethic and commitment towards fitness really impressed Liu. According to him, the win for pull-up competition was well-earned, and there is no match for Ryan Gosling’s athleticism.

Even though we’ve seen some healthy aggression on set in between Kens, it doesn’t mean that there was any kind of real drama. The set maintained a positive environment despite the masculine Kenergy overwhelming cloud, which was seen during the workouts of Ken. The on-set trainer insisted that it was quite fun and competitive for everyone involved.

Both Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu might have a little under-surfaced real antagonism, but that played well for the film’s sake. They are both professionals, and they didn’t have any bad blood in between. Liu has tried to de-escalate the rumors by posting on Instagram a picture of himself and Ryan Gosling, saying he would “beach off with [Gosling] again in a heartbeat” (via ET Canada); it’s just a reference from the movie and not real life.

As for the others, Gosling might have beaten the other Ken stars in the pull-ups, push-ups, and similar challenges which were all part of healthy competition, but apart from that, there is no bad blood between the actors.
