Ryan Gosling’s ‘The Fall Guy’ Has a New Trick to Get Fans to Stream it Online After Massive Theatrical Failure and It Just Might Work This Time
- The Fall Guy is now available on streaming but with a surprise to attract viewers who missed it in theaters.
- espite having a star-studded cast, the film grossed only $180 million worldwide against a $125 million budget.
- The movie faced stiff competition from major releases, poor marketing, and an early digital release, which contributed to its box office failure.
Starring Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt as Jody Morena, The Fall Guy was destined to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2024. The David Leitch directorial had nearly the right blend of all genres- action, romance, and comedy.
Additionally, the film also borrowed its name and some plot details from an ‘80s show of the same name, adding in a nostalgia factor. Yet, despite all these strengths, it failed, as its revenue struggled to break even with its budget.
On paper, the summer flick should have climbed much further ahead and perhaps it still may. After close to four months of its release, the movie has announced a special something that may appeal to those who missed catching it on the big screens.
The Fall Guy gets streaming exclusives to pull in audience
Starting August 30, The Fall Guy opened itself to streaming on NBC’s Peacock. However, it also brought along at least 20 minutes of bonus footage exclusively for that platform in an extended version aptly titled The Fall Guy: The Extended Version. While the original theatrical version had a runtime of 126 minutes, the never-before-seen extras will dial it all to nearly 2 and a half hours of big star energy.
The Fall Guy had its biggest strength in having Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt as the leads. Furthermore, the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hannah Waddingham added further teeth. However, the film settled for just a $180 million worldwide box office against a reported production budget of $125 million.
Regardless, premiering at SXSW on March 12, the Gosling-Blunt pair’s dynamics received a fair response. The Rotten Tomatoes score of 82% by critics and 86% by viewers should aid this statement. Filled with elaborate stunts, meta-humor, witty plot twists, sarcasm, cameos, and an inside view of filmmaking, the film has enough potential to make its presence felt, at least on streaming platforms.
Why did the Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt pair-up fail?
One of the biggest reasons behind The Fall Guy’s underperformance at the box office was stiff competition. The movie came at a time when it had to hold up against big-ticket and franchise releases like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, IF, and The Garfield Movie. Thereafter, many have attributed poor marketing as another cause behind the poor reception.
The trailer for the movie likely did not convey its blend of various genres, isolating several audiences. A Looper report blamed the teaser’s mix of randomness as a cause for confusion. To top it all, a digital release coming right around three weeks following a theatrical drop may have convinced potential watchers to opt for in-home options such as the now streaming release.
The Fall Guy is available to stream on Peacock.
