Scarlett Johansson Stood Up for Harvey Weinstein’s Ex-Wife in Strange Solidarity After Her Unapologetic Support for Abusive Director Woody Allen
The stories of women in solidarity with one another while fighting systemic prejudices and oppression are heard often, even if they are from a place in Hollywood. Scarlett Johansson supported Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife Georgina Chapman as his character had a direct impact on his former wife. Johansson helped to change and lessen that impact.
Doing what she did was a noble deed on Johansson’s part. But her support of director Woody Allen, who has also been accused of s-xual assault makes Johansson’s act and candor seem dichotomous.
Scarlett Johansson Pulling Through For Georgina Chapman
When Hollywood King Harvey Weinstein‘s throne turned out to be made of the bodies he had assaulted during the #MeToo movement, things got bad for his then-wife of ten years Georgina Chapman. She was believed to have known of her husband’s conduct with women and turned a blind eye to it.
Chapman however, stated that she didn’t have the slightest clue of her husband’s heinous crimes. And actually filed for divorce as soon as the news broke to protect her children.
Facing the loss of her association with Weinstein was her fashion brand Marchesa. Unmasking of Weinstein and the fallout that followed had her company built from years of hard work on the brink of failure. Scarlett Johansson not only prevented the failure of Marchesa but made a statement about her standing on the matter.
When no one wanted anything to do with Marchesa, Johansson stepped on the red carpet of the fashion event of the year, Met-Gala wearing Marchesa in 2018. The burgundy ombre number Johansson donned made headlines for completely different reasons than it normally would. Johansson was quite unapologetic about it:
“I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers.”
This bold and kind move from Johansson saved Marchesa from a fated doom. The brand was able to create a separate identity apart from the Weinstein scandal and make its designs regular on red carpets again.
Scarlett Johansson’s Support of Woody Allen
Scarlett Johansson seems to contradict herself when she does not hold qualms against director Woody Allen who has also been accused of molestation by his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow, in the 90s. There was no medical evidence of the assault and Allen has denied all allegations repeatedly. Farrow was only seven when the alleged assault happened.
All judicial authorities which heard the case closed it after an intense investigation as there was no evidence to be found. The accusation lasted long enough to ruin Allen’s career. The whole of Hollywood turned its back on him and people who worked with him in recent years have publicly claimed to regret it. This list includes names like Greta Gerwig and Timothee Chalamet.
When asked about wanting to work with Woody Allen, Scarlett Johansson digressed from her peers saying:
“I love Woody, I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”
The theme that runs through both acts is Johansson’s ability to view a person and whatever unfortunate incident they have been linked to, in a separate light. She forms her opinions smartly and is not afraid to stick to them. A commendable trait handful of A-listers possess.
