In June 2022 there was an announcement that superstar Shakira and football player Gerard Pique had decided to separate after being together, for 11 years. It later came to light that Pique may have been unfaithful according to sources. As more information emerged in the media it became clear that Shakira’s long-time nanny, Lili Melgar played a role in initially informing the singer about her partner’s infidelity.
What was Lili Melgar’s involvement in Shakira’s break-up?
Lili Melgar had been serving as the trusted nanny and close confidante to Shakira and her two sons, Milan and Sasha for over a decade while living together with Pique’s family in Barcelona. However, unexpectedly Melgar ended up playing a part in the breakup of the couple by discovering evidence of the football star’s affair.
According to The Things, Melgar first grew suspicious when she noticed that Pique’s new girlfriend Clara Chía Martí appeared to be living in their family home while Shakira was away, on tour. Furthermore, it was reported that Melgar found women’s clothing hidden on the property. The final clue came when she realized someone had been eating Shakira’s jam, which happened to be disliked by Pique.
Devastated by the betrayal, Shakira leaned heavily on Melgar for support during this emotional time, sources said. But soon tensions boiled over, and Piqué allegedly lashed out and fired Melgar without severance upon learning she helped expose his cheating.
Did Shakira stand up for her long-serving nanny?
After Pique heartlessly fired her, Melgar found a supporter, in Shakira. When Pique’s new girlfriend, Clara Chía Martí even attempted to harm Melgar during the aftermath Shakira’s family had to step in.
The singer made it clear that she would stand by her trusted friend’s side. After moving with her children to Miami in 2022 Shakira welcomed Melgar back into her home to assist with the care of her two sons.
Shakira also honored her nanny by giving Melgar a role in her 2023 song and music video El Jefe, which speaks out against the exploitation of working-class women. The song even directly mentions how Pique failed to provide severance pay to Melgar after years of service to their family.
For this tribute which garnered over 10 million views on YouTube within 24 hours, Shakira reportedly paid Melgar around $1 million. Granted her ownership rights. Allowing the nanny to earn royalties from the chart-topping hit.
While Shakira moves forward with this chapter in her life she continues to rely on Lili Melgar for support in raising their two sons who are split between Miami and Barcelona where their father Pique resides.
