Jennifer Lopez is known worldwide for her acting, singing, and above all, dancing. The Jenny from the Block singer just released a documentary titled Halftime, which follows her journey in the months leading up to the Super Bowl Halftime Show performance in 2020 with Shakira. In the documentary, JLo has shown the fans a side of her that they haven’t seen before. The Latino singer revealed that while growing up, she did not have a good relationship with her. While talking about her mother, JLo said,

“She did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough. She thrashed the living daylights out of you.”

Jennifer’s mother, Guadalupe Rodriguez, is also in the film and admitted to being tough on her children, Jennifer, Leslie, and Lynda.

“I always had the highest expectations of them. It wasn’t to be critical. It was only to show you that you could do better. Jennifer, she gave me the hardest time, to tell you the truth. We butted heads a lot,” Jennifer’s mother admitted.

Rodriguez shared her intentions behind the tough love towards her children,

“I was far from the perfect mother. The one thing I can always say, everything I did, I did with their best interest at heart,” she said.

Educational expectations caused difficulties in Jennifer’s relationship with her mother

Their differences were mainly because Rodriguez wanted her to focus on her studies and do well, so she doesn’t have to depend on anyone. In contrast, JLo wanted to devote her time to dancing since that was her only passion. At one point, things got so bad that the singer left home when she was 18 years old after a fight with her mother.

“My mom was like, ‘If you’re gonna live in this house, you’re gonna get your education.’ We got into a bad fight one night and I just left,” Lopez said.
