This news comes amid an ongoing custody battle between Jolie and Pitt following their split in 2016. The couple, who were together for over a decade, have been locked in a legal battle over child custody and finances for several years.

Sources close to the family say that Shiloh Jolie-Pitt made the decision to change her name on her own and that it was not influenced by her mother. The insider told ET:

Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself, so Angie doesn’t know and can’t speak for it.

A recent move by the teen has people wondering about her relationship with her dad, Brad Pitt. The word of mouth has it that she might be creating more distance between them, while others believe she just wants to be known by her mom, Angelina Jolie‘s last name.

While some reports suggested a rift between Shiloh and Pitt, insiders say that’s not the case. A source close to the family revealed to Life & Style, she “is not trying to hurt her dad’s feelings.” It continued:

She has sympathy that he’s estranged from some of her siblings, but she idolizes her mom and is just doing what feels comfortable.

Jolie and Pitt might be global superstars, but to Shiloh, they’re simply mom and dad. She filled the petition on her 18th birthday, which was on May 27 in Los Angeles County Court. The Namibia born actress requested Shiloh Nouvel Jolie to be her new legal name.

While Shiloh’s decision may seem sudden, it’s not the first time one of Jolie-Pitt’s children has chosen to distance themselves from their father’s surname. Their 19-year-old adopted daughter, Zahara, went by ‘Zahara Marley Jolie’ when joining the Kappa Alpha sorority at Spelman College.

Their other biological twin daughter, 15-year-old Vivienne Marcheline, has also been seen using ‘Jolie’ in her listing in a Playbill program for a production of The Outsiders on Broadway. Shiloh, who voiced a character (Shuai Shuai) in Kung Fu Panda 3, is the first sibling to formally petition for a name change. To those who are unaware, the former couple shares six children together.
