“She wasn’t sure she wanted to have a chronic illness”: Prince Harry Admits Lying to His Ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy Before Breaking Up With Her
After Prince Harry’s memoir Spare was published, people had mixed feelings. On the one hand, many people feel for the Duke of Sussex as he had several difficult life experiences as a royal. But, on the other hand, royal fans think he shouldn’t have voiced his complaints so publicly. During the 2000s, he was involved in quite a few romantic relationships before he married Meghan Markle in May 2018.
Among his romantic connections, he enjoyed the on-and-off company of Chelsy Davy for many years, as he described in his memoir. In addition, the Duke of Sussex admitted in his book that he lied to his former girlfriend before ending his relationship with her. However, Prince Harry is now happily married to Meghan Markle and is the proud father of two beautiful children.
What Caused Prince Harry To Lie To His Ex-Girlfriend, Chelsy Davy?
As detailed in his bombshell memoir Spare, published on January 10, Prince Harry, 38, shared the moment when he met with Chelsy Davy in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2004 after first meeting at the Berkshire Polo Club years earlier. In addition, the Duke of Sussex also explained about her one special thing he has always appreciated. He said Davy was the only person who was not fascinated by his royal life and the media presence surrounding them.
The Duke of Sussex wrote in his memoir,
“She was…different. That was the word that had come to mind when I first met her, and it immediately came to mind now, and then again and again.”
The Prince continued,
“Unlike so many people I knew, she seemed wholly unconcerned with appearances, with propriety, with royalty.”
“Unlike so many girls I met, she wasn’t visibly fitting herself for a crown the moment she shook my hand. She seemed immune to that common affliction sometimes called throne syndrome.”
The Duke of Sussex revealed, however, that his life as a royal prince interfered with his romance with Chelsy Davy. According to him, Davy mainly complained about the excessive media attention she got because she had a love interest with a British Royal.
Prince Harry wrote,
“Chels and I learned an important lesson. Africa was Africa…but Britain was always Britain. Soon after we arrived back at Heathrow, we were papped. Never fun for me, but not a shock either. There’d been a few years after Mummy disappeared when I’d hardly ever been papped, but now it was constant.”
He continued,
“I advised Chelsy to treat it like a chronic illness, something to be managed. But she wasn’t sure she wanted to have a chronic illness. I told her I understood. Perfectly valid feeling. But this was my life, and if she wanted to share any part of it, she’d have to share this too. You get used to it. I lied.”
To keep his relationship alive with Davy, the Duke of Sussex had to lie to her, and this is the life of the royal family, which they must embrace together as it is. Between 2004 and 2011, they were in an on-and-off relationship that lasted for about six years as they ended their relationship in 2011 because she did not like the excessive media attention.
Queen Elizabeth II Was Another Reason For Prince Harry And Chelsy Davy’s Break-Up
In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry described how his relationship with Chelsy Davy broke up due to Queen Elizabeth II‘s disapproval of his ex-girlfriend’s carefree attitude.
The Duke of Sussex wrote in his memoir,
“I loved Chels’ ease, that she wasn’t complicated. She didn’t care what anyone thought. She wore miniskirts and high-heeled boots, danced however she wanted, drank tequila like me, and all of this made me really happy.”
“I couldn’t help what my grandmother thought about it. Or the people. And the last thing I wanted was for Chels to change to please them.”
The Duke admitted in his book that Queen Elizabeth II’s opinion of Davy affected him deeply when they were dating. Prince Harry also revealed that she was not sure about living the celebrity life as a royal, and she chose her freedom first, and the Duke respected her decision. After ending their relationship, Davy married Sam Cutmore-Scott in May 2022 and gave birth to their son, Leo, in October 2022.
