In the sea of cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine, the makers paid adequate attention to every role and did justice to the entire storyline. From Jennifer Garner’s Elektra to Channing Tatum’s Gambit, fans got to see every character they had been longing to see in their iconic superhero costumes.
Today, the industry works on central protagonists and actors who aspire to be the lead in every movie. However, some actors are happy with secondary roles as long as the script has potential. On top of that, some actors are good with cameos as well, leaving a lasting impact on the masses with just a few seconds on screen.
Channing Tatum’s String of Cameos
We have all heard of actors starting with small roles on television and in movies to lead entire franchises eventually. That is the trajectory we expect from rising actors. But what happens when already famous actors take up several cameo roles in exceptional movies? Exhibit A is Channing Tatum, who has done countless cameos in the last decade alone.
Movies like Bullet Train, This is the End, Don Jon, Free Guy, and now Deadpool & Wolverine all include Tatum in a small, cameo role. Despite being on the screen for mere moments, Tatum never fails to impress the masses with his comic timing and acting skills.
This further emphasizes how comfortable he is in his profession as an actor and that he does not need major lead roles to portray his skills. On the requests of friends and his peers, Tatum will happily cameo in movies and solidify his place in the industry. Moreover, this is not to say that Tatum does not do lead roles at all.
His entire Magic Mike franchise has done exceptionally well and his most recent venture Fly Me to the Moon also has nothing but glowing reviews for his charming persona and chemistry with Scarlett Johannson. The 2022 fantasy-action flick The Lost City also did pretty well in terms of earnings, further proving that Tatum’s popularity and demand in Hollywood are on the rise. Tatum’s upcoming films include Blink Twice and Josephine, both of which will put the actor in a new territory and showcase him in an all-new light.
How did Shawn Levy get so many cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Unsurprisingly, for a movie like Deadpool & Wolverine, director Shawn Levy did not have to go through much trouble to get actors on board for a cameo. The Marvel fandom had been waiting for this collaboration between polar opposite mutants for a long time.
When the movie finally materialized, actors from the Fox era were more than happy to reprise their roles and make a short appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Talking about how they convinced the actors to come on board, Levy told Variety,
With pretty much no exceptions, every surprise casting in this movie came down to Ryan or I reaching out to the actor before lawyers and before agents [were involved]. It literally was us asking and invariably people saying ‘yes.’
Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime project that welcomes the mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? This will eventually have far-reaching consequences on the franchise’s upcoming projects.
