Not only was she considered the Godmother of Cocaine, but soon began to be labeled as the “Black Widow” for killing her husband. Griselda Blanco’s marriage with different husbands was as notorious as her crimes. The drug lord was behind the deaths of two previous husbands and reportedly hired assassins to eliminate her last husband Dario Sepulveda.
Dario Sepulveda was reportedly shot dead by the assassins hired by his wife Griselda Blanco. Earlier, Sepulveda was ordered to execute the Godmother but ended up falling for her and eventually marrying the woman. However, Sepulveda wanted to keep his son away from the underworld, something that infuriated Griselda Blanco. As a result, when her husband took their son Michael to Colombia without Blanco’s will, he was reportedly shot by assassins disguised as police officers.
Sofía Vergara Becomes The Perfect Griselda Blanco For Eric Newman’s Griselda
While the creator of the Netflix series was talking about how impactful Griselda Blanco was in the underworld, he also mentioned that Sofía Vergara was the best choice to helm the leading role. Being a Colombian-American actress herself, and being intrigued by the powerful personality of the drug trafficker, Vergara drew interest in playing the role. Eric Newman said:
“She was perfect for the role –– not only because she, like Griselda, is a single mother who came to America from Colombia with nothing and built an empire –– but because it was unexpected of her to do [so]. Sofía has been thought of one way –– a beautiful and brilliant comedic actress –– and she is so much more than that.”
Known for her comedic portrayals and a different accent, Sofía Vergara proved to be one of the most versatile actresses by playing the Godmother of Cocaine. While talking about the miniseries, the Modern Family star told The New York Times that she was amazed after learning that Griselda Blanco being a mother of four managed to build the most formidable empire in the underworld.
