“I’m ready to be a grandmother not mother”: Sofía Vergara and Ex-husband Joe Manganiello Clashed Over Having a Child Before Their Divorce
Last year’s summer we got to witness some of the biggest news about celebrities and movies, one of which was the split between Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello. They were commended as one of the most cherished couples in the industry until their shocking divorce in 2023.
When the former couple announced the termination of their marriage, they asked for privacy and stated that it was a mutual decision. A year later, Sofía Vergara has now opened up about the reason behind the separation. The actress shared that she didn’t want to become an “old mom” and her former husband wanted a child, and failing to conclude various disputes, they had no choice but to part ways.
Sofía Vergara Breaks Silence Over Divorce With Joe Manganiello
In 2014, Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello crossed paths when the actress was engaged to ex-fiancé Nick Loeb. However, since Vergara’s engagement couldn’t last long, Manganiello was brave enough to open his heart to the actress, and as they both had feelings for each other, the Magic Mike XXL actor proposed to the Modern Family star the same on Christmas Eve. Following the proposal, the two walked down the aisle in 2015.
Since then Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello shared love until last year’s summer when they announced their divorce. According to People‘s report, the director cited “irreconcilable differences” while filing for divorce with ex-wife. However, the former couple then issued a joint statement saying that the decision was necessary as things didn’t work out.
Now, a year later, the Griselda star opened up about her split from Manganiello and explained that she had almost reached menopause while her former husband wanted to have kids. During her interview with El País, she said:
“My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom. I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore.”
Sofía Vergara also mentioned her 32-year-old son whom she shares with her ex-husband Joe Gonzalez, and added:
“I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children. I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things.”
After splitting from her ex-husband Joe Manganiello, Sofía Vergara shares that she’ll be happy to become a grandmother, but cannot afford to become an older mother. The former couple despite trying to figure things out, parted ways and are leading happy lives.

While many celebrities choose not to speak about their publicized divorces, Sofía Vergara emerged as an exception to this case. While explaining that it is indeed a tough decision to part ways after years of marriage, the public eye over her relationship dynamics has helped her move on faster. While speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, the Strays actress said:
“I’ve been moving on. You’re out there [in the public eye] and people know that’s part of being a celebrity. I knew it was gonna happen. You can’t hide those things.”
Talking about how the media addressed her divorce, Vergara was “surprised” to see that everything was accurate. She added:
“It wasn’t bad. I think, you know, I have to say the press was very respectful and very nice. And I thought that they were gonna invent more things, and you know how it usually is.”
Now that the former couple seems to have moved on, Sofía Vergara mentioned living a good life with her Colombian friends (in the same interview with El País), while there have been rumors about Joe Manganiello dating actress and model Caitlin O’Connor.
