Fans react to Timothée Chalamet replacing Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka

Timothée Chalamet is regarded as one of the finest actors of the current generation who is excited about playing Willy Wonka in Wonka, but fans of actor Johnny Depp, who portrayed Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, are not happy.

A user went ahead to write, “I don’t know if he’ll be able to surpass what Johnny Depp did with the role but I’m really hoping he comes close or does better and that it’s genuinely a good movie and not just a cash-grab. The Tim Burton film was my childhood and I’m hoping they don’t tarnish that legacy.”  Another user stated that they are going to give this (yet another remake) a pass.

A Twitter user added to the string of comments, “No one..literally NO ONE asked for this film”, whereas another added, “Have you ever wondered how Willy Wonka met the Oompa Loompas? No, not a single person, living or dead, has given that a second though?” Another user expressed, “What makes me nervous is he said oh it’s Willy before Wonka, like’ wonka hasn’t always been the characters’ last name. So what are we gonna get? Some bullshit HE HAS TO EARN THE NAME WONKA.”

Timothée Chalamet on saying YES to Wonka

During an interview with Vogue, the young actor who is all set to sizzle on-screen in the younger version of Willy Wonka, a character from Roald Dahl’s bestselling children’s novel of the same name, was asked about his thought process behind saying yes to the movie.

Chalamet added at the time, “To work on something that will have an uncynical young audience, that was just a big joy. That’s why I was drawn to it. In a time and climate of intense political rhetoric, when there’s so much bad news all the time, this is hopefully going to be a piece of chocolate.”

The director and co-writer of the movie, Paul King, who is famously known for directing Paddington and Paddington 2, shared with People magazine that Chalamet is a phenomenal actor who was able to successfully put his spin on the iconic character.

He said, “I think what’s so remarkable about his performance is not only that he is funny and mischievous and quite mysterious, as well — just like the Willy Wonka that people will know — but also, he brings such heart to the role and he’s a brilliant actor. He’s incredibly emotionally intelligent and can bring a great deal of emotional truth to the role.”

What is Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka about?

According to the director, the upcoming movie is going to narrate the tale of a young Willy Wonka who comes to an uptight European center of chocolate with all of the fancy chocolate shops that sell candy at sharply inflated prices. He shared that Wonka brings a riot of color and energy and the future and a lot of joy.

King noted, “We try to evoke that through these kind of dance sequences there. And there’s a couple of really big numbers in there, and there’s an amazing sort of zero-gravity set piece [and] some really lovely numbers.” During the interview, he praised the young actor, stating that his Wonka is everything that people would expect but also a whole lot more because there is an emotional depth and truth.

The director, however, did acknowledge that it’s true, the stakes were high for Chalamet as he was walking in the footsteps of phenomenal actors Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, but he did a great job. He lastly added, “It should just be a great Christmas movie. That’s what we’re trying to do, and I hope people really embrace it as that.”

Wonka comes out in theaters on December. 15.
