Sony Is Back With El Muerto After Bad Bunny’s Exit
Sony has resumed the production of the first Latino-led Marvel project El Muerto. The project got delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes which not only led to losing its place on the release calendar but also Bad Bunny’s exit from the project. However, according to the reputed media outlet Variety, Sony is back with the development of El Muerto.
The project was to be directed by Mexican filmmaker and screenwriter Jonas Cuaron. The script was written by the Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. While appearing for the cover story of Vanity Fair in October 2023, the I Like It singer was asked about the development of El Muerto. He mentioned that he did not know what to say as the situation regarding the dual strikes was still delicate in Hollywood.
El Muerto revolves around the character of Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez. He is a part of a lineage of wrestlers Luchadors, who inherit a special mask that can easily provide them with superhero powers. Bad Bunny was the perfect choice for the protagonist due to his involvement in the world of wrestling. He is quite popular as one of the biggest celebrity wrestlers.
Bad Bunny Talks About His Much-Hyped Departure From El Muerto
The Puerto Rican musician tried his luck at acting with Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train and was even critically praised for his performance. He was supposed to be the face of the first Latino-led Marvel project El Muerto, but unfortunately, things did not turn that way. During an interview with the famous media outlet Vanity Fair in October 2023, the two-time Grammy winner spoke about his future plans as an actor and even talked about El Muerto. He said-
“As a movie consumer myself, I’m not one to watch a lot of action movies. I’d even say it’s my least favorite genre. I would really like to play other kinds of things, like a little bit more drama, romance too, or comedy, maybe a history movie with a little action in it.”
While talking about how desperately he wanted to be a part of El Muerto, the rapper-turned-actor drew parallels between the much-hyped project and wrestling at the Cinema Con in 2022. He said-
“It’s incredible. I love wrestling. I grew up watching it, and now I’m a wrestler. That’s why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role [for] me. It will be epic.”
El Muerto crossed paths with Spider-Man in Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man #16 and #17 comics. As of now, no dates have been announced with respect to the release of El Muerto. After Bad Bunny’s exit, it has been speculated that El Muerto might see its theatrical release only by 2025.
