Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released in 2018, and it took 5 years for its sequel to release. Now, the third installment Beyond the Spider-Verse has already gone through multiple delays, and a recent update from its composer adds another detail to the reasons for its delay.

Why Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Is Delayed

Beyond the Spider-Verse was initially slated to release in March 2024. However, it faced a major setback due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. Fans are more worried about its delay because of the cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

There have been multiple speculations and rumors about the reasons for the delay. According to insider Jeff Sneider, Sony had scrapped most of the film due to creative differences. Since the production will be starting from scratch, Sneider believes that the movie won’t come before 2027.

According to Vulture, producer Phil Lord demanded way too many edits during the production of Across the Spider-Verse, which made the artists unhappy as they had to work overtime. Moreover, fellow producer Chris Miller was reportedly absent during most of the production process.

Although President of Sony Pictures Imageworks Michelle Grady said that all the revisions were a part of the process, Sony might not be willing to work with Lord and Miller anymore (according to Comic Book). This reportedly happened due to budget issues for the Spider-Noir spin-off.

However, recently, Spider-Verse music composer Daniel Pemberton discarded the creative differences reports on his X handle, saying that it is hard to find any accurate stuff on the internet.

Pemberton’s comments give some reassurance to fans. Although the news of the delay up to 2027 might be true, the reason behind it might not be this severe. It might be to avoid a possible clash with Spider-Man 4, which will most probably come out in 2026.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Cast and Plot

Despite the delays, the anticipation for Beyond the Spider-Verse still remains high thanks to the impact its predecessor had on the audience. The film is expected to pick up where Across the Spider-Verse left off.

Miles Morales is trapped in an alternate dimension of Earth-42, where his variant, instead of his uncle, has become the Prowler. The film will likely show how Miles will return to his own universe and stop The Spot from killing his father, which is actually a canon event for him.

Miles is fighting against the idea that certain tragedies are necessary for a Spider-Man to fulfill his role. And Miguel O’Hara is the one who wants all the canon events to happen, even though the Spider-Men are aware of them already. However, by the end of the sequel, Miles has managed to pull Spider Gwen and some other Spider-Men to his side.

Although the cast has not been officially confirmed yet, Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Oscar Isaac can be expected to return as Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Miguel O’Hara. Moreover, Issa Rae as Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, and Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Vélez as Miles’ parents might also return.

Beyond the Spider-Verse is said to be the last movie of the Spider-Verse franchise. However, whether it will be continued or connected to another Spider-Man storyline is yet to be seen.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse are available to stream on Netflix and Prime Video.
