Superman Trailer: James Gunn’s Pa Kent Replacement Will Make Fans Miss Kevin Costner Harder
- The first teaser trailer for James Gunn's Superman has been released recently.
- The actor who is playing Pa Kent has big shoes to fill after Kevin Costner's portrayal of the character.
- James Gunn is all praises about the leading man of the upcoming movie.
The wait for the first glimpse at James Gunn’s Superman is finally over with the release of the first teaser trailer. Superman is one of the most beloved DC superheroes and Zack Snyder’s live-action adaptation of the character was a huge hit. Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the character left a lasting impression on fans.
In fact, fans were so taken with Cavill’s iteration of the DC superhero that when it was announced that he was parting ways with the franchise, they were beyond enraged. Now, David Corenswet has taken over the role in the reboot of the movie and Pruitt Taylor Vince has succeeded Kevin Costner as Pa Kent. However, there is a good chance that fans might not find Vince’s portrayal of the character as convincing as that of Costner’s.
New Pa Kent actor in James Gunn’s Superman might leave fans unsatisfied after Kevin Costner’s iconic portrayal
When co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran announced that the DC universe would get a reboot, fans were elated that they would no longer have to bear with the half-cooked movies they were being given. However, that excitement quickly turned into disdain when fans learned that they would have to let go of Henry Cavill’s Superman for the franchise to get a makeover.
Now, with the DCU live-action film franchise’s kickstart months away, the trailer of Superman has dropped (via YouTube), and Constantine actor Pruitt Taylor Vince can be seen in the role of Clark Kent’s adoptive human father Jonathan Kent/Pa Kent. This is a departure from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in which Yellowstone star Kevin Costner played the character.
However, Costner was killed off in the movie when he was swept up into a tornado while Cavill’s Clark watched on. His death did not exactly go well with fans because fans thought Clark could have saved his father. Had the death been natural, it would have been more convincing.
Regardless, Costner set the standards high for Pa Kent, so Vince has big shoes to fill. So far, the trailer only shows him in a few scenes, and the full depth of his relationship with Clark is yet to be seen. That said, hopefully, this time he will live long enough to see his son don the familiar cape and save the world.
James Gunn is all praise for David Corenswet
Despite fans’ disapproval of Corenswet, James Gunn has always had his back and expressed his faith in the actor’s talent. Recently, a panel was held to celebrate the trailer’s debut, and Collider‘s Steve Weintraub was in attendance. Gunn shared how thrilling it was to work with the Hollywood actor.
The thing that connects him so much in some ways to Christopher Reeve is he has a lot of deep training. I’ve never worked in my entire life with such a rigorous actor. He challenged me on a daily basis to really get the most out of his character, get the most out of his story. Everything he does in the movie is utterly true.
Gunn insisted that everything Corenswet does in the film is absolutely real, so nothing he does in the film looks like he is faking it. He also said that he got the tapes of Rachel Brosnahan and the Pearl actor’s self-tapes on the first day of casting. So, his initial anxiety about finding the right actor subsided after he watched those tapes.
Superman will be in theaters from July 11, 2025.
