Taika Waititi Abandons Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Franchise, Prioritizes Star Wars Movie Over Thor 5
Actor and filmmaker Taika Waititi is well-known for helming oddball comedies, such as Boy (2010), What We Do in the Shadows (2013), Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), and Jojo Rabbit (2019), to mention a few. The audience greatly admires the director, who has furthered his career as a producer and voice actor.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe films Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), which star Chris Hemsworth as the beloved character Thor, are also among Waititi’s directing credits. When Love and Thunder debuted in July 2022, both reviewers and viewers had mixed opinions. While some praised the film for its humor, action scenes, and acting performances, others questioned its storyline and tonal inconsistencies. Taika Waititi says he won’t be involved in Thor 5
According to Business Insider, Marvel Studios are now looking forward to developing another Thor movie but this time without Taika Waititi. During a press event for his upcoming movie Next Goal Wins, Waititi spoke to Business Insider and was asked about the development of the new Thor movie and his involvement in it to which he said,
“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate. I know that I won’t be involved. I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”
He further said that he imagines that another Thor movie would be a lot sooner than his other project, noting that he loves Marvel, he loves working with them and Chris Hemsworth.
Taika Waititi added during the event,
“I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”
Back in July of last year, the director-actor had mentioned that he would do another Thor movie only if Chris Hemsworth returned as the title character. Hemsworth had shared with EW that he did not want to be playing Thor for a very long time, so Marvel fans started rolling their eyes.
Taika Waititi focused on developing a Star Wars movie
The well-celebrated and admired director who has a couple of non-Marvel projects lined up for him is currently working on developing a highly awaited Star Wars movie which he says is going to take its time to get off the ground. Waititi mentioned,
“It’s still marinating. I’ve been writing it.”
Taika Waititi, who is married to singer-actor Rita Ora, is also working on the adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s graphic novel The Incal, for the big screen. He shared with BI that he plans for Klara and the Sun to be his next movie, which is based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel.
Talking about his Star Wars movie, the director shared with Total Film last year,
“Look, I think for the ‘Star Wars’ universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the ‘Star Wars’ universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprint for the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’”
He added at the time that he would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise, it feels like it’s a very short story.
