“Thanks for the warning”: Madame Web Reveals Netflix Release Date and Everyone’s Ready to Avoid the Sydney Sweeney Starrer Like the Plague
Sony Pictures’ superhero movie Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and more, was directed by S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay she co-wrote with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, and Claire Parker. The movie is the origin story of Cassie Web, who starts to experience clairvoyant powers, which force her to revisit her past. She also tries to save three interconnected young women [Spider-Women] from a dangerous killer.
Madame Web turned out to be one of those movies that were highly anticipated by the audience and towards the end turned out to be one of the biggest disappointment. The movie opened to negative reviews from critics and the audience with a few of them stating that it shouldn’t have been made in the first place. Now, there has been an update on its digital release.
Madame Web producer explains why the story is not attached to larger SSU
Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, is the fourth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Director S.J. Clarkson was hired to develop Sony’s first female-centric Marvel movie, which was reportedly planned to be the first movie in a potential new franchise.
According to reports by ComicBook, following the critical and financial performance of the movie, no sequel or follow-up had been confirmed. During her conversation with the publication, the director said,
“Well, I thought it would be a bit greedy to do four origin stories. That’s not really fair, is it? I’ve got to share it…I think the origin story of the girls we’re given, hopefully, a hint of the spirit of who they are. We’ve tried to stick to the spirit from the comic books, and draw from that, find out who they are, and get a little bit of their sass and a little bit of their character coming through.”
The director continued that there are a lot of stories to be told, and maybe one movie would not do justice to these characters. However following the response to the movie, it’s hard to see another movie from the franchise coming up soon. The producer of the movie, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, shared with Collider why they decided to keep the movie separate from the larger world of SSU.
“We saw the advantage in not having the burden of the attachment of all this other stuff that has gone on. You’d be silly to think you don’t pay homage to it and some acknowledgement, which we do, but it really freed us in a way to tell a pure story.”
