Thanos Couldn’t Snap The Eternals, Says Director
Director Chloé Zhao explains why the main characters of Eternals weren’t snapped by Thanos:
Director Chloé Zhao reveals why Thanos couldn’t have snatched the primary protagonists in her new Marvel film, Eternals. The next instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuted in theatres this past weekend, sending shockwaves across the whole franchise. Not only is Eternals one of the most contentious Marvel films of all time, but it also introduced the MCU to a number of firsts, including its first deaf hero (Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari) and its first openly homosexual hero (Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos). The film concentrates on introducing the Eternals, a race of cosmic eternal creatures, to the cosmos through a dual storyline set in both the past and the present. The Eternals have little to do with the larger MCU, aside from a few mentions of characters like Doctor Strange and Iron Man. Nonetheless, fans have been consumed with wondering what happened to each new character revealed after 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War obliterated half of the MCU. Fans questioned actress Simu Liu and the rest of the cast about whether their characters were victims of Thanos’ snap in September’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
There were plenty of questions about the fates of the Eternals:
There were also many questions concerning the Eternals’ destinies, and Zhao had a solution for them. In an interview with CinemaBlend ahead of the premiere of Eternals, Zhao refrained from openly declaring why the cosmic squad couldn’t be blipped away, but she did significantly hint at why they all survived Infinity War undamaged. Zhao stated:
Well, I can’t say this out loud, but if you think about… if you think about what the Celestials told them. If you think about what the Celestials told them about themselves, technically they can’t get blipped.
Eternals reveals, the characters were all made by the Celestials thousands of years ago:
According to Eternals, the Celestials created all of the characters thousands of years ago, and instead of existing as biological lifeforms, they’re comprised of manufactured pieces. That would rule them out of Thanos’ snap, as he only aimed to wipe off half of all existence. This indicates that during the time between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, all ten Eternals were still alive and presumably saw humanity’s struggle to move on. While some members of the crew, such as Sersi (Gemma Chan), acquired feelings for humans, others did not, and this struggle is central to the film. Since Endgame reversed the snap, new initiatives in the MCU have made different attempts, with differing degrees of success, to study what life is like on the other side of it. So far, only The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have dealt with the ramifications of the snap and its reversal, while the Eternals have made a few references to it as well. Given that none of the characters were impacted, it makes sense that there would be minimal discussion over what happened to them all. For them, it was simply a horrible incident that harmed people.
