The power couple recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary and took to social media to share a sweet snapshot of themselves marking the milestone.

In the picture, Tom Hanks is looking at his wife with adoration while holding a cake adorned with yellow frosted flowers and “Happy Anniversary” written on top. Wilson is seen smiling at the delicious dessert with her hand resting on her cheek, displaying the couple’s affectionate bond.

Hanks and the 66-year-old first met on the set of the ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies back in 1981, where they started as friends. At the time, Hanks was married to Samantha Lewis, with whom he had two children. However, they divorced in 1987, and after two years of dating, the Cast Away actor and Wilson tied the knot in 1988.

The couple went on to have two children together, Chester “Chet” Hanks and Truman Hanks. Wilson is also a stepmother to Hanks’ older kids, Colin and Elizabeth.

One year after their wedding, The Terminal performer won the Golden Globe for Best Actor and thanked his loving wife, “Rita Wilson — thank you, babe, for marrying me.”

While the father of four is known for his noteworthy acting career, the singer has also made a name for herself in Hollywood, with acting and music credits to her name. However, in a previous interview, Wilson discussed how she prioritized her children and husband, which caused her to slow down her career.

Wilson’s career in music began years ago when she released her first album, AM/FM. As a native of Hollywood, she started acting at the age of 16 in The Brady Bunch and went on to appear in several other TV shows and movies like Bosom Buddies, and That Thing You Do.

However, when she became a mother, the songwriter made a conscious decision to slow down her work and focus on raising her children.

She wanted to be there for them when they got home, drove them to carpool, and be present for all their needs, she said.

“Tom was also working a lot, so we would travel with him. If both of us were working and not at home, my kids would have been affected. I wouldn’t call slowing down my career a sacrifice, I would call it a choice.”

Although the artist was not actively pursuing her career during that time, she does not consider it a sacrifice, but rather a choice.

She and her husband have always been supportive of each other’s careers, and their happiness for each other’s success never waned. She explained,

“If you have someone happy for your success, and you’re happy for their success, that’s not even an issue that comes up. You know about schadenfreude when you’re happy for someone’s failure? Well, there’s another concept called freudenfreude, which is when you’re happy with someone’s success. I live in the freudenfreude. Somebody else’s success does not diminish my own.”

Even though her kids are grown up now, Rita Wilson says that parenting never really ends, it just becomes different.
