Margot Robbie Allegedly Became The Highest-Paid Actor In Hollywood With Barbie
Margot Robbie’s Barbie has been the biggest critically and commercially hit movie of 2023 as of now. With a distinct method of storytelling and the conceptualization of the social restrictions in our society from a Mattel doll’s eye has beautifully struck a chord with the audience of almost every age bracket around the world.
Barbie grossed a whopping revenue of $1.18 in less than a month of its release against a budget of $100 million, which went on to escalate to $145 million. With mammoth profits at the box office, it has been speculated that both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were offered fat paychecks. Reputed media outlet Variety had reported that the actors were paid around $50 million each.
Hollywood insider Matt Belloni spoke about the details of the paychecks that were offered to the Barbie actor on his podcast The Town. He said-
“By the way, that’s low. That is ridiculously low. I heard it’s way higher. There was a Variety report that she’s going to get $50M dollars in Barbie, it’s actually more than that.”
The extravagant marketing and promotional strategy of the American doll manufacturing company Mattel and the billion-dollar production house Warner Bros needs no explanation. They literally painted the world in pink. From establishing Barbie selfie booths to pitching in the leading influencers from almost every country- both Warner Bros and Mattel did not leave any stone unturned to take Barbie to almost every country in the world. Reportedly a budget of $100 million was allotted for the marketing of Barbie.
Margot Robbie And Ryan Gosling On Playing Barbie And Ken
During an interview with The New York Times, both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling spoke about the Greta Gerwig-directed movie and even discussed their initial reaction to being chosen to play Barbie and Ken respectively. Margot Robbie mentioned-
“Tom and I would call the key executives at Warners and Mattel beforehand. We’d make sure we’d do it on a Friday night. And we would say, “Go make yourself a drink, your favorite cocktail. We want you to sit down. Now make yourself another one of those cocktails, then start reading the script and just go on the ride.” In other words, we thought they were going to be like “No,” and maybe if they’re a little bit tipsy, they’ll open their minds to how fun this is.”
She further explained-
“Then it was a process. We’d have like six-hour chats with the teams at Mattel and we’d be like OK, tell us exactly why this line scares you? We’d already done the process of understanding what they’ve built. We spent time at Mattel headquarters, we went into their factories, we watched them make a doll and we talked to people who make them. They knew we were coming from a place of respecting the brand. But at the same time, you need to be able to point out all the things that people have found problematic about Barbie. Greta would say, run toward that, that’s going to be more interesting.”
Ryan Gosling was apprehensive about playing Ken in the washboard abs, blonde hair, and floral print shirts. He felt grateful as both Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie helped him get over his inhibitions while filming Barbie.
Barbie is still running in theatres around the world.
