If you’re at all familiar with the isekai genre, then you’ve probably heard of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. However, for a new viewer planning to watch the entire series in the correct order without missing anything, it can get quite confusing, given the number of OVAs and movies it already has.

Therefore, to make things easier, below we’ve provided two distinct watch guides: one following the chronological order of events in the storyline, and the other based on the release dates of each anime part. The Chronological Watch Order of Every That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season, OVA, and Movie

Next, here we have a more detailed watch order guide for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. But this will be more beneficial to the returning viewers who want to know the exact chronological sequence in which the events in the anime took place. Even excluding the recap episodes, the timeline remains complicated, but honestly, this is much more interesting to discuss.

1. Season 1 Episode 24: “Black and a Mask”

Interestingly, the final episode of Season 1 is chronologically the very first incident in the series. That is because it acts as a prequel, showcasing how Shizue was summoned to this world during World War II and became one of the strongest. The episode also explains how she met Rimuru in the first place.

2. Season 1 Episodes 1-16 (early arcs)

Then we go straight into the anime’s first episode, and there shouldn’t be much to explain here. We all know how Satoru Mikami starts his journey in the isekai world, becoming Rimuru Tempest and building a peaceful monster nation on his own.

3. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime OAD 1 & 2

Even before you finish Season 1, around the midway point, it’s better to watch these two lighthearted bonus episodes that focus on the everyday lives of Rimuru and the residents of Tempest. Although nothing significant happens, they show how far Rimuru has come in building his peaceful nation.

4. The Slime Diaries (Episodes 1-12)

After the Orc Lord’s defeat, Rimuru and the others enter a momentarily peaceful era, and that is exactly what this 12-episode spin-off series is about. It’s a must-watch because it acts as a refresher from the series’ thrills and action, highlighting festivals and other joyous occasions among the town’s residents.

5. Season 1 Episodes 17-23

After completing The Slime Diaries, you can return to the main storyline, as things pick up again with rising stakes. As Rimuru becomes a teacher at the Freedom Academy, he encounters some powerful individuals and learns about Shizu’s past. That is shown later in Episode 24, which chronologically happened before all of this.

6. Sukuwareru Ramiris (Short Episodes 1-12)

Right after completing Season 1, we got another set of short episodes. This mini-series centers on Demon Lord Ramiris and her dungeon alongside Beretta and Treyni. Although largely non-canonical, it’s a treat to watch, as it playfully teases many events from the main plot.

7. OAD 3, 4, & 5: Rimuru’s Glamorous Life as a Teacher

These three OADs expand the teacher arc with an original story that bridges the gap between Season 1 and 2. Basically, they’re an extension of the time Rimuru spent as a teacher at the Freedom Academy. They also feature some great fights and plenty of thrilling moments.

8. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Visions of Coleus (3 episodes)

While Rimuru was busy with his teaching position, something unexpected happened, and he became entangled in a struggle involving royal succession and even vampires! Thus, these three ONA episodes basically serve as a bridge between the teacher arc and the beginning of Season 2.

9. Season 2 Episode 0 – “Digression: Hinata Sakaguchi”

Next, just when we thought we were finally getting Season 2… nope. There was this special prologue that shifts the focus to Hinata Sakaguchi and the Holy Church before the events of Season 2 begin. However, it becomes quite important to the plot, as she and Rimuru later plunge into conflict.

10. Season 2 Episodes 1-24

Kicking off with the special episode, we see Rimuru’s town, Tempest, come under attack, forcing him to make heartbreaking sacrifices to protect his people. That’s why Season 2 is the best in the anime so far. It was also quite self-contained, as by the end of it, Rimuru even earns recognition among the other Demon Lords.

11. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bond

This is an original movie set right after Season 2, as Rimuru travels to the Kingdom of Raja after learning of a mysterious crisis involving Hiiro, a surviving ogre with ties to Benimaru.

12. Season 3 Episodes 1-24

Following the events of the movie, Rimuru returns to his town and focuses more on diplomacy, trade, and strengthening Tempest’s influence across other nations. So, all in all, this season really takes the world-building to another level.

13. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Tears of the Azure Sea

rimuru from the azure sea movie

Another side story set after Season 3, this movie sees Rimuru and his companions head to an island vacation, but things don’t go as smoothly as planned. Though it doesn’t have much relevance to the main plot, the movie works as a nice refresher before the events of Season 4.

NOTE: The movie still hasn’t hit global streaming platforms, and has only been released in theatres so far.

14. Season 4 Episode 1 – Ongoing

Finally, we now enter Season 4. New allies, rival nations, and powerful enemies begin to shape the next phase of Rimuru’s rule as a Demon Lord. In fact, this season is expected to be split into multiple cours, as there’s a lot that will go down. So, let’s keep watching.

Which Episodes You Can Skip in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?

Although we don’t recommend skipping any part of the anime, a few episodes are mostly filler and aren’t canon to the manga. So, only if you’re short on time and want to speed through the series, here are the episodes you can skip:

  • Season 1 Episode 4 – In the Kingdom of the Dwarves – Mixed Canon/Filler
  • Season 1 Episode 24 – Black and a Mask – Filler

The special episodes (24.5, 24.9, and 36.5) are recap episodes that summarize previous events, so you can technically skip them without affecting your viewing experience.

Do You Need to Watch the Movies and the OVAs to Understand the Story?

For the most part, the OVAs and movies of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime are non-canon, meaning it won’t be a problem even if you skip them entirely. The main television anime seasons adapt the primary storyline perfectly, so it’s okay if you only follow those.

Of course, watching them will let you immerse yourself in the world even more and help you connect with the characters on a deeper level. As a result, they enhance the overall appeal of the narrative. So, we recommend skipping them only if you’re in a time crunch.
