Many seasons have come and gone, but the infamous Oscar slap still remains fresh in the memories of people on the internet. Now that another Academy Awards has also been done and dusted, with Will Smith being the butt of the joke throughout the night, his close friend Cedric the Entertainer contemplated whether the internet is reaching for it a bit too hard. The joke has now been overused to the point that it’s not even funny anymore. Although that one particular action brought many important topics to the table to be discussed, the stand-up comic feels nobody should suffer the consequences the actor is suffering.

Maybe in an ideal world, the way the internet is treating Will Smith would have been justified, but in a world where everyone is human and allowed to make mistakes, Cedric the Entertainer believes Will Smith deserves a second chance.

Cedric the Entertainer wants Will Smith to have a second chance

All it took was a single action to get ridiculed and joked about by the same people who once hailed Will Smith as the king. Everybody’s favorite well-accomplished actor, soon turned into an eye-sore, after attacking the comedian, Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. The infamous moment since then has been screengrabbed and used over a million times to joke about on the internet.

Will Smith himself has been subjected to severe scrutiny and has been nearly canceled by fans of cancel culture. Although the actor’s action cannot be justified, his close friend Cedric the Entertainer believes Smith is not worthy of such meaningless hatred. Instead, a serious discussion should take place that can help resolve the matter and prevent any future mishappenings. He said,

“People are human beings and they make human mistakes. So this idea of canceling people out of their lives and saying they can’t exist anymore or they shouldn’t, I feel that that’s a bridge too far. And it’s usually done in the sense of blind internet power. It is people that have no real attachment to it, just giving an opinion for the moment, and then they jump on the wave and they create this thing that comes rushing at you that makes you look like the worst human being in the world. When it was a one mistake, it was a mistake.”

Will Smith’s pal Cedric the Entertainer then further took a jab at cancel culture and requested people to review the matter once before canceling someone just because it is a trendy topic. It maybe is enticing to be a part of a discussion that everybody’s included in, but that should not blind people to their own judgments. The internet is now given the ultimate power and Cedric the Entertainer feels the folks online should have an idea of the weight their words hold.

The real reason behind the Oscar slap

The incident that took the internet by storm had multiple layers to it, which many on the internet successfully broke down into pieces for a better understanding. But there is no way to find out if all the speculations are true or not since none of the people involved have shared their accounts on the matter. Therefore what actually happened and why are the two questions that have people confused still.

Cedric the Entertainer has now come forward with the intel that wasn’t privy to the outsiders until now. According to him, their past history of the two personalities had much to do with the slap,  rather than just that singular joke, which Smith found offensive after catching the visible disappointment on his wife’s face. He said,

“A lot of people thought that it was the joke itself, but obviously there was true undertones that led to that kind of behavior, especially from Will Smith and from Chris Rock, to be honest. Eventually as a men, there is a degree of, both of them had great falls because of that.”

Cedric the Entertainer then further added,

“I do feel like, again, it was some things that the lines were crossed, like real lines.I think that we would love for the world to be a place where we could just get over it and get past it. But again, when people draw lines in the sand sometimes you get those hard arguments that we’re going to have to deal with and may not be ready to deal with. But I am encouraged that they will get to it though.”

The internet has had its reactions and overreactions to the incident that is now very difficult to erase from the history of the internet. Thus, the stand-up comic and Will Smith’s close friend, Cedric the Entertainer believe it is now time the internet moves on, and views the incident the way it was, and not just a joke. Only time will tell if the Internet will be successful in obliging his request.
