A new Pirates of the Caribbean movie was in the works and to the fans’ utter dismay, Johnny Depp was not involved. An announcement in June 2020 revealed that the new Jack Sparrow was probably going to be Margot Robbie, a very unconventional take.

The rumored Disney project was going to be written by Robbie’s Birds of Prey screenwriter, Christina Hodson. In addition, the second reboot was to be written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and the veteran of the Pirates franchise, Ted Elliott. The producer of the 5-film Pirates franchise, Jerry Bruckheimer was also supposed to be associated with the new projects. But the whole thing has seemingly gone down the drain now. At least the Robbie project definitely has.

Margot Robbie has done a cover story with Vanity Fair, where she talked about all her upcoming projects including Babylon and Barbie. The Academy Award nominee was also asked about her Pirates of the Caribbean project but apparently, things couldn’t work out as she said,

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Replacing Johnny Depp‘s Jack Sparrow was indeed an ambitious thought. And with the love and support that Depp has garnered since the publicized defamation trial, the studio probably didn’t want to take the risk.

The project was in the works till earlier this year

However, it is notable that the spin-off project has been shelved not so long ago. The franchise producer, Bruckheimer, shared in May during an interview with The Sunday Times, that both the aforementioned projects were still in the works. He had also cleared that as of then, Depp was not going to be a part of any of the two films, despite rumors being rife. He said,

“Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.

[Will Depp be back?] Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”

It seems like the Depp v Heard defamation trial that concluded in June this year, has something to do with the shelving of the project. The Johnny Depp starrer Pirates franchise has been fairly successful both in the domestic market and worldwide, grossing around $1.5 billion domestically and $3.07 billion globally.
