The Batman 2: Did Robert Pattinson Spoil the Real Villain in the Sequel That We Have Been Waiting For?
- Robert Pattinson fueled Court of Owls speculation in 'The Batman 2' with his comments.
- Matt Reeves has declined to confirm the villains in 'The Batman 2', creating more curiosity.
- While Penguin is confirmed, other rumored villains include Clayface, Hush, and Two-Face.
When it comes to the villains, no other superhero has arguably as many iconic enemies as Batman. Every villain, from the Joker to the Riddler, adds a new form of anarchy in Gotham. Matt Reeves’ The Batman has set the tone to be more realistic and gritty already, which allows the possibility of more grounded villains.
As fans still await the sequel, many have been guessing which villain might appear next. Robert Pattinson, who is known for his candid interviews, might have almost spilled the beans about the next big bad of Gotham.
Robert Pattinson On the Court of Owls Theory
The Batman brought a new take on the Riddler, but viewers have been speculating about the next big villain, and one name that keeps popping up is the Court of Owls. This shadowy group has been in the minds of Batman fans since its first appearance in 2011.
In a Q&A session with Vanity Fair, a fan came up with the theory of whether it is possible that Thomas and Martha Wayne were the leaders of the Court of Owls. Robert Pattinson replied,
I like that one… If they disappear and [are] kind of secretly running it, that would really be a very difficult thing for Bruce to handle, oh it’d be a nightmare…I was definitely kind of thinking that Court of Owls is probably going to be in the sequel, definitely seems like… I mean, I’m literally just guessing.
But who are the Court of Owls? This is one of the ancient societies that have controlled Gotham City for ages through violence, politics, and power. The members wear owl masks, and they have an organized assassination squad called the Talons.
However, so far, there has not been much to say about the sequel. Director Matt Reeves has been pretty tight-lipped about the villains in the sequel. When asked about the possibility of the Court of Owls, he said to Showsha,
We can’t comment on the movie because we are doing the movie and then you’d know what movie we’re doing and we’re not going to say that yet.
Pattinson’s desire and Reeves’ half-denial and being coy have only fueled even more speculation among the fans. It might be possible that Reeves is playing it close to the chest to keep things spontaneous.
Will the Court of Owls Appear in The Batman 2?
It might look like the Court of Owls is well suited for Reeves’ grounded and dark Gotham, but there are reasons to be skeptical about their appearance in The Batman 2.
The Court of Owls has already appeared in several Batman adaptations. They have been featured in two live-action TV shows: FOX’s Gotham and CW’s Gotham Knights. They were the main villains in Batman v Robin. Besides these, they have also featured in animations and computer games.
Perhaps this wide exposure might make Warner Bros. and DC Studios think twice before using them again so soon. Every new superhero franchise or adaptation tries to keep itself unique by giving a fresh take to the characters. That is why using villains that have been featured may not fit this strategy.
Despite that, the Court of Owls might return in a later film. They might appear as a secret group that is operating from shadows until Batman interferes, which could possibly lead to a climactic conclusion of The Batman saga.
As of now, the villains rumored to appear in The Batman 2 include Clayface, Hush, and Two-Face. There is only one confirmed villain, which will be Colin Farrell’s Penguin, as The Penguin series will be kickstarting the events of The Batman 2.
