“The final film was terrible”: Former DC President Labeled Joss Whedon’s Justice League as “Frankenstein cut” in a Scathing Criticism Against Zack Snyder Haters
Zack Snyder’s larger-than-life storytelling is one of his unique signature styles with respect to his projects in the world of entertainment. The filmmaker is well known for grand visuals along with compelling storytelling. He has been one of the prominent faces behind the billion-dollar superhero franchise DC.
After the critical and commercial failure of the 2017 Justice League with Joss Whedon’s cut, Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League was released in 2021. Zack Snyder’s cut was a great success both critically and commercially worldwide. Even former DC president Diane Nelson expressed her opinions on the different versions by both Joss Whedon and Zack Snyder.
Former DC president Diane Nelson On Joss Whedon’s Justice League Cut
Former DC president Diane Nelson was the head of the billion-dollar superhero franchise DC for eight years. She ran the franchise from 2009 to 2018. During an interview with the media outlet Bleeding Cool, Diane Nelson spoke about many things- from competing with Marvel Cinematic Universe to Zack Snyder‘s Justice League. She expressed her dislike towards the theatrical cut of the 2017 released Justice League.
While talking about replicating the success of DC’s rival competitor Marvel, she said-
“It is the single biggest thing that made us look amateurish, certainly relative to Marvel, if not just on its own.”
On comparing the Joss Whedon’s cut with Zack Snyder’s version, she said-
“My characterization is Joss was a bit of a shiny penny during a time when they were looking for something shiny to grab onto. I mean, I thought the final film was terrible.
She further added-
I would have much preferred a darker-than-I-wanted or longer-than-I’d hoped-for Zack Snyder cut than the Frankenstein cut we got in theatres. The Trinity characters of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman should have, by any measure, blown any other superhero movie away, and they didn’t.”
After the failure of Joss Whedon’s Justice League cut, Zack Snyder’s version was a huge success and it went on to collect $657.9 million, against the budget of $70 million.
Former DC Head Diane Nelson Feels Josh Whedon Could Have Done Better With The Superheroes
Irrespective of multiple versions of the superhero project Justice League, the world only remembers Zack Snyder’s cut. Zack Snyder and Chris Terrio’s rewritten version had multiple alterations made by a list of writers and screenwriters like Joss Whedon, Seth Grahame-Smith, Geoff Johns, Allan Heinberg, and Andrea Berloff.
However, the alterations made by Joss Whedon were significant and even earned him the role of director for the reshoots. His version excluded the backstories of reputed superheroes from DC Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg from his version of Justice League.
Joss Whedon even reshot Superman’s role and what led to the resurrection of the Kryptonian superhero. The movie was a major failure after the changes that were made by him. He had sidelined the character of the Cyborg too. It went on to become one of the biggest failures of the House of DC. This year the back-to-back failures of Zachary Levi’s Shazam Fury Of The Gods, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, and Ezra Miller’s The Flash, DC’s future has been shrouded with uncertainties.
