The ‘Gunna’ Clause in Young Thug’s Plea Deal Explained – Are The Rappers Still Friends?
- After two and a half years in jail, Young Thug has entered a plea deal that will finally free him.
- Thug's plea deal has a clause which states that he can meet his brother and Gunna, who were also related to the case.
- Thug and Gunna are most probably still on good terms considering their exchange in the past year.
Young Thug has been finally released from jail after he accepted a plea deal. He was arrested in Atlanta on gang-related charges in May 2022. He and Gunna were among the 28 people related to the former’s record label YSL (Young Stoner Life) who were charged in a RICO (Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations) case involving alleged gang-related activity and other crimes.
Gunna was released in December 2022, and there was quite a stir because many thought that he had thrown Thug under the bus in return for his own freedom. This kind of speculation is bound to cause tension between the people involved. So, it is worth wondering whether or not the two rappers are still friends.
What Does Young Thug Accepting the Plea Deal Entail?
According to the Associated Press, Young Thug has pleaded guilty to one gang charge, three drug charges, and two gun charges. He has also entered a no-contest plea for another gang charge and a racketeering conspiracy charge. This implies that he can be punished as guilty for those charges.
Thug entered these pleas without striking a deal with the prosecutors, leaving his sentence completely up to Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whitaker. The judge has sentenced him to four decades. The first five years out of this are to be served in prison, but it has been commuted to time served.
He will be on probation for the next fifteen years, and if he does not violate it, the last twenty years of his sentence will be commuted to time served. However, things can turn ugly if he violates any probation because then, he will not only have to serve those years in prison but also pay any penalty for it.
The judge has ordered him to steer clear of any violations with the gang members or with the victims or other defendants in the case. An exception to this will be his brother and Gunna, with whom he has to work due to contractual obligations. This brings Thug’s relationship with Gunna into question.
Are Young Thug and Gunna Still Friends After the Latter Was Released Almost Two Years Ago?
Young Thug started his professional musical career in 2010, and by 2013, he was signed with fellow Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane’s label 1017 Brick Squad Records, an Atlantic imprint. Later, he switched labels and worked with some of the biggest names in the hip-hop industry, including Kanye West.
In 2016, Thug started his own record label imprint, YSL Records. The first artist to sign with this label was Gunna, a fellow native Atlanta rapper who was also attracting interest from the Best Friend singer’s former mentor, Gucci Mane. Thug and Gunna developed a deep friendship over the years and often collaborated.
After their arrest and the Lemonade rapper’s subsequent release in December 2022, their dynamic was speculated to have shifted. However, over time, there have been plenty of signs that it was not the case. In April 2023, Thug expressed his support and love for his friend surprisingly by updating his Instagram bio link with streaming links to Gunna’s 2022 album, DS4Ever (via HipHopDX).
Months later, during an interview with YouTube blogger Infamous Sylvia, Thug’s father Jeffrey Williams Sr. claimed that he loved Gunna. Willaims Sr. shot down any allegations that the FukUMean rapper had snitched on Thug or done anything to hurt the then-incarcerated rapper’s case. Earlier this year, in XXL, Gunna confirmed that there is no bad blood between him and Thug. All these signs imply that the two are most probably still friends.
