“The honest truth is…”: Why James Gunn Removed His First DC Movie Out of DCU Canon?
James Gunn is a director who has breathed new life into the Marvel and DC universes with his distinct style of humor and action. He was named co-head of DC Studios in 2022, and since then he has made it clear that he wants to create a new DC Universe that invites inclusivity and accurately depicts the modern world that we live in.
Gunn has an inclusive and forward-thinking vision for the DC Universe. In order to allow audiences from every aspect of life to find themselves in the characters they like, he wants to produce stories that accurately reflect the diversity of the real world.
Gunn has already taken some steps toward putting his vision into action. However, it appears that he does not want his first DC Universe film to be the canon for the DC Universe.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is not the canon of the DC Universe
It has been verified by DC Studios’ co-head James Gunn that The Suicide Squad is no longer canon for the future DC Universe franchise. This indicates that the movie’s events, including the passing of Nathan Fillion’s The Detachable Kid/TDK character, will not be seen as being a part of the new continuity.

Given that The Suicide Squad was a critical and financial success, this is a big shift for the DC Universe. The Suicide Squad did not fit in with Gunn’s vision for the universe, he stated, and he wanted to start over with the new DC Universe.
In a Reddit conversation with a fan, Gunn made the revelation. The fan enquired as to whether TDK was still alive or not and whether his passing in The Suicide Squad would be considered. According to Gunn, DC Studios movies and canon will start with Superman: Legacy which is an upcoming movie.
The DC Universe’s canon would be Superman: Legacy
The Authority, a group of superheroes who will get their own DC Universe film in the near future, will be introduced in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, Superman: Legacy. Along with Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, the movie also features David Corenswet as Superman. Additionally, it was revealed that Anthony Carrigan, a star from the series Gotham, would play Rex Mason/Metamorpho in the film.
