“The most important thing to me, unless I’m broke”: Viggo Mortensen Will Only Return to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Under One Condition Unless His Bank Balance Plummets
Viggo Mortensen, widely known for his role in The Lord of the Rings, stepped into the film industry with a role in Woody Allen’s 1985 film The Purple Rose of Cairo. However, his scenes never made it to the final cut.
Mortensen went on to star in several other movies like The Portrait of a Lady, G.I. Jane, and 28 Days before he landed the role of Aragorn in the fantasy film series The Lord of the Rings (TLOTR). The last TLOTR film was released in 2003, and a new movie is in the works. However, the Captain Fantastic star has one condition for returning to the franchise.
Viggo Mortensen Has a Condition for Returning to the Lord of the Rings
Adapted from J. R. R. Tolkien’s eponymous fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings is a franchise of three films. Released between 2001 to 2003, all the movies are directed by Peter Jackson and have been critically and commercially successful.
It has been more than two decades since a new film from the Middle World graced the screens. However, in another two years, that is scheduled to be changed as in May 2024, Variety reported that a new movie named The Hunt for Gollum is in the early stages of development.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Viggo Mortensen claimed that he would return to the fantasy franchise only under one condition.
I haven’t read a script. So I don’t know. The script is the most important thing to me unless I’m broke, I have no money and I’m lucky to get any job. So it depends.
So, his return to the franchise is primarily dependent on a good script, and in the absence of one, the only thing that will get the actor to star as Aragorn is financial issues. Hopefully, it would not have to come to that since the writers of the original films are penning the script along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
The Dead Don’t Hurt Has a Blink-and-Miss The Lord of the Rings Reference
While there is no surety regarding Mortensen’s return as Aragorn, fans can take relief in the fact that he is not completely ruling out the chances of him reprising the role. That said, his new movie has a very small but significant reference to the Range of the North.
In an interview with GQ, it was revealed that in the new movie, Mortensen’s character uses the sword Andúril, which belongs to Aragorn.
Everything was right, and then I said, well, we should have a sword. And I did look and there were some good ones and I thought, well, it might be kind of good to use this one that I had because it’s really good.
He further said that he asked for permission from both Peter Jackson and the studios before he used the sword. He also said that it was a last-minute accident. Well, it is a rather lucky accident for fans.
