‘The Mummy should…..not be terrifying and scary’: Brendan Fraser Criticizes Tom Cruise’s 2017 Mummy Movie, Open To Mummy 4 To Restart Franchise
Brendan Fraser, who became a household name thanks to his role as Rick O’Connell in The Mummy and its two sequels, says he’s open to starring in the franchise again. The actor also gave his opinions on Tom Cruise’s 2017 reboot and explained why it “flopped.” The actor appeared for an interview with Variety to talk about his upcoming movie, The Whale. The role has landed him in the Oscar race. He then further talked about his work in the fan-favorite series, The Mummy, during the interview. Director Stephen Sommers also once explained why Fraser was perfect for the role.
Brendan Fraser said he would like to return as Rick O’Connell
Actor Brendan Fraser played the role of Rick O’Connell in three movies, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The role made the actor quite famous as he went on to star in big hits after the first movie. During an interview with Variety, he explained that he would love to return as the fan-favorite character. “I don’t know how it would work. But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit,” he said.

The actor explained why the reboot failed
In 2017, Universal rebooted The Mummy and Fraser was not a part of the movie. Instead, Tom Cruise took the handle and dealt with the consequences of unearthing an ancient tomb. The actor gave his opinions on the movie,
“It is hard to make that movie. The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
The actor further explained that he knows how tough it is to pull off the movie as he has done it thrice.
Stephen Sommers said he was fit for the role
Director Stephen Sommers said he cast Brendan Fraser because of his very specific set of skills. He said,
“He could throw a punch and take a punch and he had a great sense of humor. You really like the guy. He never comes across as cocky or arrogant.”
He further explained that the actor did his own stunts and even injured his knee at one point, but completed the film nevertheless. The actor is now excited for his fans to watch his upcoming movie The Whale, in which he plays an obese man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter.
The Whale will hit the theatres on 9 December 2022.
