SUMMARY
  • Despicable Me 4's success at the box office is proving that Ryan Gosling and Kevin Costner need to try something new.
  • The Steve Carell-starrer has left behind The Fall Guy and Horizon: An Amercian Saga at the box-office.
  • The new Despicable Me movie has become a favorite among fans who are all praises on the internet.

There’s a clear message with Despicable Me 4 that animation is rapidly gaining a special bubble for itself that even live-action movies are failing to achieve. Steve Carell’s animated character has surpassed Kevin Costner and Ryan Gosling’s projects by a significant margin on the professional level.

Directed by Chris Renaud and written by Mike White and Ken Daurio, Despicable Me 4 is a sequel to Despicable Me 3 which was released back in 2017. The recent installment is already creating a name for itself, leaving live-action movies behind which is pretty bad news for both Costner and Gosling.

Ryan Gosling‘s The Fall Guy hit the theaters in May and was followed by Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga, released in June. Despicable Me 4 was released earlier this month and although Steve Carell-starrer animated flick came last in terms of release date, it still is doing better than both the other movies.

The animated movie has already made a good profit whereas Horizon: An American Saga and The Fall Guy have failed in doing so. Despicable Me 4 has already earned $220 million worldwide, including a domestic opening amount of $122 million. The movie was set against a budget of $100 million and according to the figures, has already made twice the investment.

On the other hand, Gosling’s The Fall Guy became a box office tragedy with only $175 million worldwide against a $125–150 million production budget. On the same note, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga has opened with only $11.3 million against a $100 million budget. With such figures, Costner might hamper his own career by going with his plan of releasing 3 more movies in the series.

Animated movies seem to be racking up the numbers this year if the success of Garfield and Inside Out 2 is anything to go by. Taking all of this into account and the fact that neither the Barbie star nor Costner has worked as a voice actor in an animated movie, maybe it’s time for the stars to try their hand at it.
