Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman is a fantasy drama television series developed for streaming giant Netflix. The series narrates the story of Dream, also known as Morpheus, who is held captive for 106 years after being captured in an occult ritual. Dream finally manages to escape and is now trying to restore order to his realm, the Dreaming.
The first season of the series premiered in August 2022 with ten episodes and received positive responses from critics as well as the audience. The show’s casting, design, and performances by the actors were highly lauded. The Sandman was later renewed for season 2, and now the new cast has been revealed.
New cast members revealed for The Sandman Season 2
The first season of The Sandman was highly appreciated by the audience and the critics for its story, production, and, most importantly, its faithfulness to the source material. Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel of the same name was released almost 35 years ago, and the makers were appreciated for being able to portray the same characters on screen.
Tom Sturridge starred as Lord Morpheus, along with Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, Patton Oswalt as the voice of Matthew the Raven, and Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne. Now, as the show gears up for season 2, new cast members have been announced. Showrunner Allan Heinberg shared with TUDUM,
In the next chapter of The Sandman, the King of Dreams will come face-to-face and go toe-to-toe with the formidable rulers of Hell, Asgard, Faerie, and the realms beyond.
According to reports, actor Ruairi O’Connor is set to play Orpheus, an idealistic, romantic young man. Freddie Fox, who was recently introduced as Ser Gwayne Hightower in House of the Dragon, will join the cast as Loki. Game of Thrones star Clive Russell will star as Odin, whereas Laurence O’Fuarain will be seen as Thor, Ann Skelly as Nuala, Douglas Booth as Cluracan, and Jack Gleeson as Puck.
New faces are entering The Dreaming. Meet The Sandman's Orpheus, Wanda, Nuala, Cluarcan, Loki, Thor, Odin, Puck and Barnabas.

The report also mentioned that Indya Moore is all set to play Wanda, while Steve Coogan will be voicing Barnabas the dog in season 2 of The Sandman. Adrian Lester will star as Destiny, Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, and Barry Sloane as The Prodigal.
The showrunner explained in his conversation with Tudum that the new characters are going to bring more magic and nightmares to the Dreaming. He added that the new cast members will be portraying characters that are as powerful as Dream, noting that together they will ensnare Dream in a web of palace intrigue, glamour, demon battles, and spider-s*x.
Heinberg concluded that Dream [Sturridge’s character] is not prepared for what is to come for him and how it will transform him into a far more dangerous Dream of the Endless.
Tom Sturridge explains Morpheus’ voice in The Sandman
The actor, who was highly appreciated for his exceptional performance in the series, had the chance to discuss his character when he appeared at London’s MCM Comic Con in 2023. He was asked during Q&A about how he discovered the voice of Morpheus, to which he replied,
You become so intimate with Morpheus, and you get to the end of it, and you think you’ve lived a life with him, and then you ask yourself, ‘What does his voice sound like? I asked Neil Gaiman in the beginning; it was my first question. I said, ‘What does he sound like? Because I don’t know and I’m afraid, and he said, ‘it’s very simple. He is the voice inside your head.
In an interview with EW in 2022, Gaiman revealed that he had watched over 1500 Morpheus auditions, but he was extremely confident that two-time Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge would be an apt choice for the part. The actor was asked about the lengthy process of casting, to which he replied,
It was entirely necessary because this is a character who is utterly beloved—by me more than anyone else. That required you to spend time with a human being to discover if they can live up to the dream you have of who he is.
He added that he cared so deeply about the physicality and image of Morpheus, hinting at the skeletal, muscular, otherworldly physique. The actor mentioned that it was satisfying to finally be able to transform his body in a way that he felt was unusual but it fit the character he was playing on-screen.
The first season of The Sandman is streaming on Netflix.
