Emerald Fennell’s black comedy psychological thriller Saltburn has taken the world by storm with its provocative scenes and underlying themes. Many media houses are terming Saltburn as a subversion of a modern-day Jane Austen novel. The main theme that it focuses on can be summarized in three words: “eat the rich.” It is quite an out-of-the-ordinary take on a class welfare story. The portrayal of privilege, desire, and dark obsession makes Saltburn impossible to look away from.

Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, and Barry Keoghan were showered with praise by the critics. Recently, director Emerald Fennell appeared in an interview with Letterboxd, where she says the movie is a comedy made for “sickos” and that the sicker, darker, and more provocative it gets, the funnier it becomes.

“This one is truly for the sickos:” Saltburn director says the movie is made for sickos

In the interview with Letterboxd for Saltburn, the interviewer reminds Fennell that “sicko” is a term that is getting associated with the movie. Instead of being taken aback, Fennell claims that it is where the film derives its comedy from. She particularly hears the review by Hunter Morris on Letterboxd that says:

“This one is truly for the sickos. A bit too sick for my taste at times, but you sickos will love it.”

The Promising Young Woman director makes a statement by saying that she doesn’t find the movie that sick when she is used to seeing abominable portrayals of women on screen in film and television:

“For me, the sicker it gets, the funnier it is. I always feel like, aren’t we all sick? Is any of this really that bad? Is any of this worse than the sort of things people are typing in at three in the morning? Maybe I’m being facetious, but I don’t think there’s anything in this film that’s that sick, especially when I’ve been used to seeing women’s bodies treated abominably in film and television.”

She then laughs off the review and adds:

“We’re talking about a few little close-ups, you know? There are a couple of moments that are extra-Gothic, but there’s nothing in this film that isn’t honest about how we feel about people. There are so many people that we would eat alive, given half the chance.”

Fennell always had a penchant for dark and twisted comedy, which can be seen in both Promising Young Woman and Killing Eve. Many have already praised the director for her guts to put down important themes in such a brazen manner.

Saltburn‘s Emerald Fennell wants to make a “very erotic” Jurassic Park movie

If one thinks Saltburn is where the director has peaked with her provocativeness on screen, they would be wrong. The director recently revealed what her dream project is, and it is to do an erotic take on the classic movie Jurassic Park

In a conversation with Deadline, she opened up about what she had in mind for the iconic showdown:

“I honestly feel that I’ve been so lucky. I’ve been able to make my dream projects already,” she said. “But my favorite film of all time is Jurassic Park, so I would love to get in on the dinosaurs. Well, first and foremost, it’s very erotic. I think humans and dinosaurs have gotten to that stage in their time together where things are starting to get quite thrilling. So, there’s a marriage between a man and a velociraptor and it’s basically a domestic drama.”

It is unclear whether it was a sarcastic jab or if she was dead serious about it. However, it would be quite a fun thing to see for a change after quite a few dark projects like Promising Young Woman, Killing Eve, and more recently, Saltburn.

Saltburn will be available on Prime Video on December 22, 2023.
