After witnessing last year’s summer blockbuster Barbie, many fans might wonder about the movie that gave Margot Robbie an experience she had never before. Despite Greta Gerwig’s new take and an exceptional environment on the set, Barbie isn’t the one that allowed Robbie to explore her passion for acting.

Margot Robbie Revealed She Fell in Love With Acting Through Neighbours

Despite starring in the cultural phenomenon crafted by acclaimed director Greta Gerwig, it wasn’t Barbie that helped Margot Robbie discover her true love for acting. The Australian actress has landed quite notable roles like Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, Naomi in The Wolf of Wall Street, and many other remarkable portrayals. Her recent film Barbie became a massive hit and has been honored with a Golden Globe Award for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

During a recent interview with Deadline, Robbie was asked to disclose the project that enchanted her the most, to which she replied:

“It was probably Neighbours, because the stuff I did before that was so small, so low-budget, it would be hard to describe them as real film sets…I think people often don’t talk about soap operas in that way, but they really should. The pace is insane.”

Neighbours is one of the longest-running Australian shows which started in 1985, followed by Robbie joining the cast in 2008. In a short period, the Babylon star became a fan-favorite character and was even nominated for two awards. Robbie added in the interview that:

“It was absolutely fascinating. I loved it. I loved it so much. And I was on it for three years, so I walked off that set with an education, and I knew that it would by far be the hardest set I ever worked on. I knew everything would be easier after that because nothing else on earth shoots at that kind of pace.”

The Bombshell actress compared soap operas with big-budget films and stated that those three years (2008-2011) were quite tough. However, Neighbours provided Robbie with a deep understanding of the collaborative efforts an actor should put in.

In an interview with Variety, Margot Robbie was asked to guess lines from her movies, and when she started opening up about the soap opera, the actress said:

“I kept calling and then one day they let me through to her, I don’t know why, I think it was a mistake.”

The Birds of Prey star talked about her casting as Donna and how it was eventually given to her after she was asked to come next week. Robbie added:

“And then she was like, ‘How old are you?’. And I was like, ‘I’m 17’. She said, ‘Oh we need a 17-year-old girl right now, come in next week…I did the audition… I didn’t hear anything and then all of a sudden they were like, ‘You have the role, you start next week’, and then I was on it for three years.”

Margot Robbie appeared in the final episode of the show in 2022, and also mentioned that Neighbours “completely changed” her life and described the show as an “insane machine”. The actress was able to deeply learn about the industry, and eventually found peace in acting.
