Jason Momoa began his career with the role of Jason Ioane in the action-adventure drama series Baywatch: Hawaii, in which he appeared from 1999 to 2001. He came a long way from there as he went from playing a Hawaiian lifeguard to playing the role of an aquatic DC superhero named Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe with his first appearance being in Justice League.

By 2018, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman had his own solo movie in the franchise. He is back again as the iconic superhero in the upcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, he has recently suggested that Aquaman’s future might not be as bright as fans would expect it to be.

Although there has been a sharp decline in the box-office performance of movies of the superhero genre, it can not be denied that this genre is one of the most beloved ones in Hollywood. With the increasing competition in the market, the chances of a superhero movie landing well with the audience and critics are diminishing.

Whether this is due to a decline in the quality of these movies or because fans are out of the lavender haze they were in with the superhero movies, it is hard to tell. A week ahead of the release of Aquaman and the Last Kingdom, Jason Momoa has expressed his doubts about Aquaman having a future in James Gunn’s DCU.

During an interview with ET recently, Momoa revealed the only condition under which there is a chance of Aquaman’s return. He said:

“I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice [with James Gunn and Peter Safran set to reboot the DC franchise.] The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there’s a possibility. But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.'”

The actor himself saying that things are not looking too good is bound to spark some concerns regarding the superhero’s future. As of now, the reins of Aquaman’s future lie in the hands of the audience and, of course, the co-CEOs of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Jason Momoa Is Not Willing to Let Go of the Character

There are certain things people love more than others. When it comes to playing the role of Aquaman, the choice seems to be easy for Jason Momoa: he will do it as many times as he can. Considering that he gave his everything to make the infamously mocked DC Comics character a hero, he is a hero himself for the fans who love Aquaman.

Jason Momoa stated his willingness to reprise the character in the future, saying:

“I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time. I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it.”

While Aquaman’s future is uncertain, the Hollywood rumor mill has been suggesting that Momoa will be taking on the role of Lobo in DCU. Only time will tell what the future has in store for the Game of Thrones star and Aquaman.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom will be in theatres from December 22, 2023.
