The coincidence left Ridley shocked, having never made the connection before. While promoting her new film Sometimes I Think About Dying, Ridley recounted the story on a podcast appearance. 

What Was the Film That Got Its Title from Barbie?

In the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Daisy Ridley talked about how her movie’s name coincidently was identical to the recent hit Barbie.

The line was delivered by Margot Robbie in the movie – “Do you guys ever think about dying?”

The movie in question is Ridley’s upcoming drama Sometimes I Think About Dying. Starring Ridley as Fran, a socially awkward woman struggling with intrusive thoughts about her own mortality, the film dives deep into existential questions about death, loneliness, and making meaning in life.

So it’s quite fitting that Fran’s constant grappling with her own demise led to the film’s title coming from Barbie’s dialogue. According to the actress, she didn’t make the connection between the improvised Barbie line and Sometimes I Think About Dying until it was explicitly pointed out to her.

“I watched the film, fan of the film, all this stuff, and literally someone two weeks ago said, ‘Oh yeah, the line in Barbie.’ And I said, ‘Oh, what line in Barbie?’ ‘Do you guys ever think about dying?'” Ridley recounted.

Even after acting in both Barbie and Sometimes I Think About Dying, Ridley remained oblivious to the shared dialogue between projects. She admitted the revelation left her shocked.

“I never clocked that until two weeks ago. How strange is that? There was something in the air.” she told the podcast host.

Clearly, for Ridley, the repeated phrase that bounced between her Barbie role and Sometimes I Think About Dying’s title was more than just a coincidence. To her, it represented “something in the air” greater than herself that inspired the connection.

Ironically, Ridley has more than just Sometimes I Think About Dying on the horizon related to grappling with death. Her next film after Sometimes is also centered around mortality, though in a much darker vein.

Titled The Young Wives Club, Ridley’s new movie follows a woman investigating the suspicious deaths of her two best friends. Described as a Hitchcockian thriller, its plot delves into murder, mortality, and the dark secrets lurking beneath a small town’s surface.

So while Ridley never intended the repeated “think about dying” phrase to link her next two films, both projects ended up exploring the theme of death anyway. From Sometimes I Think About Dying’s existential dive into finding meaning despite one’s own demise, to The Young Wives Club’s exploration of lives tragically cut short.

The actress is clearly drawn to stories about making sense of death and the time one has left. Her upcoming slate of thought-provoking films on the topic proves that “Something in the Air” has Ridley fixated on life’s fragility and abrupt end.
