Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn started with 2016’s Suicide Squad. Although the film garnered mixed reviews, there was no contention about Margot Robbie and her stupendous performance as the titular character, Harley Quinn. Her portrayal became a massive pop-culture phenomenon, giving birth to a spin-off solo film, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Due to popular demand, Robbie again reprised her role in the standalone sequel/soft reboot film The Suicide Squad (2021).

In a recent interview with Variety, Margot Robbie recently hinted at her desire to pass on her torch to someone else. She was asked if she had any intention of reprising the role of Harley Quinn in the future, especially with Lady Gaga now portraying Harley Quinn in Todd Phillips’s Joker 2. She did not outright say that she was tired of her role and wanted to retire but she mentioned how she always wanted the character to be passed on to other actresses so it could go in different directions.

“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”
