The reason there are so many great characters in Hell’s Paradise, who are not only entertaining to watch but also epitomes of strength and resilience, is the series’ incredibly well-balanced power system. Through the concept of Tao, it seamlessly ties together martial arts, spirituality, and mortality in a way rarely seen before.
However, a well-developed power system also makes its characteristics quite difficult to rank. In one-on-one scenarios, every character may have an advantage over someone while being at a disadvantage against others. Still, if we rank them solely based on their mastery of Tao and overall physical strength, the list below should be as accurate as possible. So, without further ado, let’s dive right in.

15. Tenza’s Natural Talent Was Paired With His Adaptability
Though Tenza may not have lived long, by the time he was present in the series, he showed great resilience and enough willpower to stand bravely against the Tensen. It’s unfortunate that he faced one of the strongest enemies so early in the series, but as a disciple of Shion and the assigned Asaemon for Nurugai, he never showed any sign of weakness. His swordsmanship was also extremely polished, which helped him earn a spot on the list, even if it’s at the very bottom.
14. Fuchi Incorporates His Medical Knowledge in the Fights
Fuchi may not look that intimidating, but you wouldn’t want to mess with him in a fight. First of all, he is very agile and may not be easy to track down, which complements his shorter build. Plus, his uniquely shaped blades make fighting against him unpredictable, as he fights in a rather unconventional way. His medical knowledge also helps him find the weak points of his enemies. So, even without learning Tao in the first place, Fuchi secures the 14th place on the list.
13. Toma Proves Himself as One of the Most Capable Shinobi
While he never got to be on the same level as Chōbei, Tōma’s quick thinking ability and survival skills do earn him a spot on the list, even if that’s only 13th. Now, don’t get us wrong, there are so many strong characters in the anime that even ranking 13th makes Tōma insanely capable in any regular fight. And after learning the basics of Tao, he becomes a lot more reliable in battle. So, everything combined, Tōma truly is a capable ninja in the unforgiving world of Hell’s Paradise.
12. Nurugai Demonstrates Significant Strength in Later Arcs
In the earlier arcs of the manga, or the earlier episodes of the anime, Nurugai doesn’t really seem all that powerful. They have always been more of a survivor than a fighter. But after getting accustomed to Tao in the later arcs of the series, their already sharp battle sense was further polished. Although Nurugai was primarily seen in the role of restoration and support using their Tao, the series proves again and again how capable they were in a fight, which deserves the 12th place.
11. Shion Possesses One of the Sharpest Perceptions of All
The 4th-ranked Asaemon of the Yamada Clan, Shion, does live up to his title. Despite being blind, his sense of awareness and perception is on a whole other level. Well, it was already sharp enough to fight against any human foe, but with Tao, Shion’s senses were sharpened to another level, allowing him to sense waves. This also enhanced his swordsmanship and allowed him to move more swiftly. Still, he may not compare to some others on the list; thus, he is only ranked 11th.
10. Tamiya Is a Swordsman But With Overwhelming Strength
Tamiya was already a fierce force before learning Tao. In fact, he was revered as one of Japan’s greatest swordsmen. People even called him the Blade Dragon. Thus, even without Tao, he could be rightly placed on this list. But the reason he is ranked a bit lower is that he never really managed to master his Tao as much as some other characters did. His lack of experience with the technique still puts him in the top 10, which says a lot, because he earned it through his own strength alone.
9. Yuzuriha’s Versatility Makes Her an Extremely Fierce Fighter
It’s unfortunate that Yuzuriha never really got that much screen time in the anime yet, despite being one of the most prominent supporting characters. But she shines later in the manga and has proven to be worthy enough to claim a spot as high as 9th on the list. Her ninjutsu has already been extremely useful in many fights, and her deception skills truly help her fill the power gap between herself and her opponents. She could even hold her own against someone like Gabimaru.
8. Sagiri Embodies Beauty and Brawn in a Perfect Mixture
Sagiri being the 12th-ranked Asaemon in the Yamada Clan makes no sense. Her combat prowess, even before coming to Shinsenkyo, was already on par with the top fighters in the series. But maybe the only thing that constantly held her back was her emotional side. She is incredibly capable with her sword, which was further enhanced the moment she finally learned to manipulate Tao. This was enough to make her rank as high as 8th on the list, no questions asked.
7. Rokurota’s Monster Strength Was Too Much for Asaemons
Rokurōta is a wild card entry on this list because he never really formally learns Tao, but appears like a monster who could instinctively make use of it despite not knowing about it. Thus, he is ranked as high as 7th on the list. Even most of the other Asaemon struggled to keep him under control, and he doesn’t really listen to any orders. His monstrous build, paired with his childlike behaviour, makes Rokurōta an extremely unpredictable force to deal with. No one would want to fight him.
6. Chobei’s Unmatched Fighting Spirit Makes Him Deadly
Not exactly like Rokurōta, Chōbei is also a monster, but for completely different reasons. He always had this wild side to him that made him ferocious. It’s almost like nothing could scare Chōbei, not even death. And when he got his hands on Tao, it gave birth to an absolute beast. His insane adaptability during fights makes him one of the strongest characters in the entire series. And his fighting spirit never dies, all of which easily makes Chōbei worthy of the 6th rank on the list.
5. Jikka Becomes More Brutal Due to His Careless Personality
Jikka has a different vibe around him. It’s like he doesn’t care about what’s going on in the world at all, and this attitude earns him a spot in the top 5. Whatever gets in his way, he could simply get rid of it. As the 3rd-ranked Asaemon, Jikka was already praised for his strength. He was naturally talented and could make precise decisions even mid-fight. That’s why he is one of the few people who could return from the island. The fact that he never needed Tao to become this strong is crazy.
4. Shija Could Even Go Toe-to-Toe With Gabimaru the Hollow
Shija’s sheer obsession with Gabimaru makes them strong enough to rank 4th on the list. They were supposed to be Gabimaru’s successor after he left Iwagakure, and they still see him as their rival. Therefore, Shija possesses many of the same strengths as Gabimaru, which is enough reason to rank them this high. Even without learning Tao, Shija’s great proficiency in assassinating any target puts them on par with those who have mastered Tao. Thus, there’s no doubt about their strength.
3. Shugen Is Renowned as the Strongest Alive Asaemon
Renowned as the strongest Asaemon alive, Shugen could easily be ranked in the top 3 the way he was first introduced in the series. But after learning the basics of Tao, his strength quadrupled. He became the pinnacle of the Asaemon. Apart from his good looks, Shugen is also extremely impulsive and violent, but it also suits his job of bringing the Elixir of Immortality back. His overwhelming swordsmanship and near-perfect Tao control turned him into the 3rd strongest character in the series.
2. Gabimaru’s Emotional Motivations Give Him a Clear Edge
Gabimaru stands as the only human who could face the Tensen on equal terms. His ninjutsu, paired with his complete Tao mastery, turned him into an absolute menace. Even in the anime, we see Gabimaru defeating enemies who should’ve been impossible to defeat at his current power level. And mind you, he didn’t even know the basics of Tao back then. But slowly in the manga, as he gradually learns more about it, Gabimaru becomes the 2nd strongest entity in the entire series.
1. Rien Stays at the Pinnacle of Hell’s Paradise’s Powersystem
Ranking each Tensen-class synthetic human in the list as separate entries wouldn’t have been right, because then they would’ve taken the top five spots anyway. Instead, it’s better to just rank Rien, the leader and creator of the Tensen, to give her the spotlight she deserves. Despite her feminine looks, Rien is the ultimate antagonist in the series. Using her own Tao and botanical knowledge to produce the Elixir of Life was a feat that only she could accomplish almost a thousand years ago. That’s why Rien is undoubtedly the strongest being in the entire storyline.
NOTE: The reason we didn’t include Mei in the list is: 1. she is technically one of the Tensen, despite acting outside their group, and 2. much of her powers are still shrouded in mystery.
