Sydney Sweeney, who rose to fame in the adolescent drama Euphoria, has explained why she had to struggle for her part in The White Lotus. In a recent interview with Variety, Sweeney acknowledged that the producers didn’t think she was the ideal candidate for the position. If you’ve been following her, you undoubtedly already know that she played Olivia in the first season of The White Lotus in 2021. She recently admitted to Variety that landing the part was no small accomplishment.

Sydney Sweeney Says She Had To Fight For Her Role In The White Lotus

Sweeney claimed in a recent interview with Variety that it is challenging for her to audition for roles that are different because casting directors frequently see her as the spoilt characters she has played, such as Cassie Howard in Euphoria and Olivia Mossbacher in The White Lotus season one.

There’s always people who see me as Cassie or see me as Olivia. They send me scripts that are just like that,” the Euphoria star said

It’s the ones I have to fight for that usually are the ones that I want that are different, like ‘Reality.’ I had to audition for it. I had to put myself on tape and send in my audition just like everybody else,” she added of her leading role in a new movie.

Sweeney continued: “It was the same for ‘White Lotus.’ They didn’t think that I was right for ‘White Lotus,’ because I did ‘Euphoria.’ So I put myself on tape, I auditioned for ‘White Lotus’ just like everybody else and had a call back like everybody else.”

I could get offered roles that are similar to the ones that I’ve played, but the ones that are different, the ones that surprise people that I do, are the ones that I usually have to fight for,” she added.

The 25-year-old actress has been in shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and Sharp Objects, but since the show’s debut in 2019, Cassie Howard has become her most well-known character.

Two years later, Sweeney made an appearance as the pampered adolescent Olivia Mossbacher in the first season of The White Lotus.

Sydney Sweeney’s Role In Euphoria and The White Lotus

The characters Sydney Sweeney chooses to play are carefully considered, yet she still finds that some of them end up being sympathetic.

On HBO Max’s Euphoria, Cassie Howard, a girl from Los Angeles who desires love above all else, plays one of those parts. She continued, “Cassie, I think is one of the most relatable characters to me because I strive for love and acceptance in other people and I’m afraid of being alone. I too was a teen girl.”

Although both of her most recent roles were on HBO, they couldn’t be more dissimilar. In Euphoria, she portrays a teen who has suffered more trauma than she should have and who is suffering as a result. Cassie experiences a downhill spiral in Season 2 that leads to multiple mental breakdowns.

Her performance as Olivia Mossbacher in The White Lotus is considerably more planned. Even to Sweeney, Olivia comes out as self-assured, smart, and a little threatening. The actress makes it a point to hunt for jobs that are unlike anything she has done previously, so getting to play people on such opposing ends of the spectrum is a dream come true for her.

I’m an actor because I want to play so many different roles,” she said. “So anything that’s different and new and I haven’t done before is what I’m searching for.”

The actress is now promoting her newest film, Reality, which is based on the actual tale of Reality Winner, a former US intelligence analyst who was sentenced to the longest prison term ever in 2018 after leaking classified information to the media.

Reality debuts on HBO May 29 at 7 p.m. PT/ 10 p.m. ET and will be available to stream on Max.
