Although their fictional characters, Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf were best friends, they suffered from borderline jealousy, leading to heated arguments on the show. And thus, Lively and Meester often faced speculations of offscreen rivalry based on their fictional characters.
For years, the ladies faced rumors of squabbles between them behind the scenes. Picked apart by New York Magazine in 2008, the outlet reported, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester, “avoid each other like the plague”. Even a blind item published by the New York Daily News hinted at the co-stars’ rivalry. Stating, “Which rival young actresses on the same hit show are forced to pose together at PR events, even though they hate each other?” the blind started a rumor.
Directing a report at Leighton Meester, an outlet claimed, Meester thought Lively to be an “egomaniac”. Without any personal confirmation from the co-stars, the outlets simply attempted publicity, igniting an unnecessary feud between the duo. For the most part, the actresses kept the real status of their friendship, hidden. Without addressing any of the rumors, the duo kept things lowkey.
However, Lively and Meester did come out to stand for each other over the years on several occasions.

Blake Lively & Leighton Meester Shut Down Rumors
Failing to sit tight with the unnecessary drama, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester, at times addressed the speculations and tried shutting down the rumors. Accusing the media of “pitting the women against each other” Blake Lively, sat for an interview to shut them down. “I think it’s so silly that they try to pry into our personal lives and create drama,” Lively claimed.
Stating the facts straight, the 35-year-old actress, claimed “All this me against Leighton thing is the biggest nonsense in the world”. Lively snapped at the paparazzi for framing their “fed up” looking images and using them as evidence against their rumored feud. While in fact, those images were actually a reaction to their shooting frustrations.
Confronting the reports of New York Magazine, even Leighton Meester denied “rumors of animosity”. Meester claimed,
“I was just reading something about, like, how Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson didn’t get along [on the set of The Other Boleyn Girl]”.

Hinting at the outlet’s attempt at publicity, Meester stated,
“Why don’t they say that George Clooney and Brad Pitt don’t get along? It’s always the girls.”.
Standing together for each other, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester not only shut down speculations but also remained great friends. Posting a throwback photo of herself and Leighton on Instagram in 2019, Lively re-lived their moment of friendship quite fondly.
