“They’re making it seem like I’m losing my mind”: Tom Cruise Was Paranoid About People Out To Discredit Him After Exposing Their Fraud Practice
The ever-so-charming Tom Cruise seems like someone who would stay away from scenarios of conflict. He’s too busy making films and doing his deadly stunts on his own to participate in arguments. Although, it wasn’t always like this.
Cruise once got himself into a situation that brought him a lot of negative press. Things went as far as questioning his sanity. The Mission: Impossible star is a Scientologist and has spoken against psychiatric ways of treating mental disorders, exposing how they do not cure the cause. The actor claims, that this is what didn’t sit right with some people. And eventually started the chatter that he was “losing his mind”.
Tom Cruise’s Infamous Couch Jump at The Oprah Winfrey Show
Tom Cruise has a career spanning several decades, where he has partook in TV appearances, interviews, and has biographies, and anecdotes written about him. One interview of his stands out from the rest. In an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Cruise created a lot of buzz with his unusual behavior.
The actor had professed his love for his now ex-wife Katie Holmes on the show. When talking about Holmes, Cruise just jumped straight on the couch in his excitement, which the live audience found hilarious and adorable but when the episode was televised, it wasn’t received as well.
The interview birthed a lot of rumors about Cruise. Whether he had any behavioral issues or if he was on drugs when the interview was shot. The incident was highly controversial back in 2005.
Tom Cruise Against Anti-Depressants
The controversy did not stop there. Cruise’s interview on Oprah was followed by an appearance on The Today Show where he vocalized his opinions on prescription meds and advocated for Scientology, the religion he follows.
He spoke out his beliefs and said that the brain chemical imbalance was not a real concept.
“I’ve never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist, I never agreed with psychiatry and then when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I started realizing more and more why I didn’t agree with psychiatry.”
The actor’s comments on Brooke Shields’ candidness on the mental struggles she was having after giving birth was also something that took things to the edge.
Tom Cruise’s Paranoia Around His Image Being Tarnished Purposefully
The rumors and speculations about Cruise’s behavior did not seem to affect him as he never bothered to offer any explanation. Not publicly, at least. Seth Rogen is a known figure in the industry.
In his book titled Yearbook, Rogen covers celebrity encounters and funny stories he has witnessed. Most notable is Cruise’s reaction to the bashing he got after his couch-jumping incident. In his book, Rogen revealed Cruise’s opinions on the matter. Following is the exchange that took place between the Hollywood stars, as Rogen mentions in his book, in 2006.
“Well, yeah, they’re making it seem like I’m losing my mind. There’s a coordinated effort to make it appear that way.”
“Who would do that?” Rogen asked.
“The pharmaceutical industry. Because my exposure to their fraud has cost them SO much money that they’re desperate. They’re scrambling and they’re doing everything they can to discredit me so I won’t hurt sales anymore,” Cruise replied, according to Rogen.
Cruise claims that he got the backlash because he revealed the pharmaceutical industry’s “false practices”. His account of the situation got public just because Seth Rogen wanted to write a book on funny and extraordinary significant celebrity moments.
