Karen Gillan feels that the backstory of Marvel’s Nebula would perhaps make for a really cool Disney+ series post the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvel Studios got themselves an all-new way to expand the MCU going forward in its next phase, ie. Phase 4 with the advent of Disney’s streaming service, way back in 2019. Disney+ has so far been useful in elevating its supporting characters like Falcon, Winter Soldier, or Scarlet Witch while also introducing some major new heroes, like Moon Knight.

Will Marvel tap into the Guardians of the Galaxy for spinoff shows?

There are various new MCU Disney+ series that succeed in meeting these criteria and exploring new corners of the ever-expanding franchise. However, so far, Marvel hasn’t managed to tap into the franchise of Guardians of the Galaxy for more spinoff shows.

The Guardians of the Galaxy’s members’ future, at the moment, is quite dubious as fans are anticipating James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The sequel is set to reunite the original cast for one last time, as director James Gunn has revealed that said the film will be the end of this version of the team. This team gained popularity with members like Gamora, Star-Lord, Drax, Groot, Rocket, Nebula, and Mantis. Fans will yet again see most of these favorite characters yet again in the much-anticipated Thor: Love and Thunder and also, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. It is still not known what the future of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy looks like, however, there are some Disney+ spinoffs that are possible.

However, there is one potential option for a spinoff for Guardians of the Galaxy that makers could follow – Karen Gillan‘s Nebula. Gillan is currently held up doing press for her upcoming film Dual, and recently Screen Rant got an opportunity to talk to the actress. During this very interview, the subject of a Disney+ show with Nebula was discussed with the actress. When Gillan was asked what it would take for the spinoff series to take place, Gillan revealed that it is totally up to the bosses at Marvel Studios, but she’d love to explore the character’s backstory if this happens at all.

I don’t know, I guess Marvel will have to say yes. So, if you want to get them to do that? That would be great. But I think I think Nebula has a really interesting backstory, so that would be really cool to learn more about.

As MCU has progressed further, Karen Gillan’s role as Nebula has substantially increased. After appearing as a secondary villain in the sophomore Guardians of the Galaxy film, she became an integral part of the Avengers after the snap by Thanos. By the time the next GOTG film, ie. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finds its way to the theaters next year, Gillan will have portrayed the role of Nebula across seven Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. However, the character has never been the focus of these films so far. But this hasn’t stopped James Gunn and Marvel from showcasing parts of her backstory to fans – like the cruel treatment she received from her father, Thanos, and her forever ongoing rivalry with her sister Gamora – however, all of this hasn’t been fully explored by filmmakers.

It is still unclear if Marvel is considering a Nebula Disney+ spinoff series at all, however, this might happen if Gillan tries to express her interest in a spinoff. The series might showcase her life and backstory post-Guardians of the Galaxy 3, ie. if Nebula survives the trilogy capper by James Gunn. Whatever the case might be, it would be really fascinating for fans to revisit the origin of Nebula and then experience what it was like for Nebula to grow up as the daughter of Mad Titan. Depending a lot on the story, Marvel might even use the show to get back Thanos (Josh Brolin), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and even the Black Order. For now, the spinoff series for Nebula simply needs approval by Marvel.
