Their plans include rebooting the DC universe with the highly anticipated film, The Flash. However, there are two other upcoming releases this year: Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2. James Wan Says Aquaman 2 Deals With Real-World Crisis
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan, the director of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, shared insights into the upcoming sequel’s tone. Wan expressed his excitement about the film’s progress, acknowledging the extensive visual effects and complex nature of the production. He emphasized that the sequel would have a notably different tone compared to its predecessor, exploring more serious themes such as climate change.
This shift aligns with the environmental consciousness that has been a long-standing aspect of Aquaman‘s comic book storyline. Wan emphasized the relevance of addressing these issues in today’s world while assuring fans that the movie would still deliver a fun and action-packed fantasy experience.
“It’s a big movie… It’s a little bit more serious, and we’re dealing with issues like climate change… So this movie has something to talk about, but it’s still a fun action-fantasy movie.”
Despite Wan’s comments on the film’s serious tone, star Jason Momoa added another perspective, highlighting the humor present in the sequel. Momoa expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming film, mentioning the enjoyable comedic moments, particularly those involving his co-star Patrick Wilson.
“I hope people are excited to see the new one… There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson… It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.”
Momoa’s comments suggest a balanced blend of humor and engaging storytelling in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Overall, the interview with both Wan and Momoa indicates that the Amber Heard and Jason Momoa starrer Aquaman sequel will feature a unique combination of more serious themes and lighthearted moments, promising an exciting and entertaining cinematic experience for audiences.
Jason Momoa Co-wrote Part Of Aquaman 2 Screenplay
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, it was revealed that Jason Momoa and his co-writer submitted a 50-page treatment for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to Warner Bros. Although the studio acquired the therapy, it appears that they mostly disregarded it. The extent to which the treatment was utilized in the final screenplay remains undisclosed, leaving uncertainty about Momoa and his partner receiving screenwriting credits for their contributions.
Momoa expressed his passion for directing and creative involvement, emphasizing his desire to be more than just an actor who retreats to his trailer.
He spoke about witnessing remarkable acting performances firsthand, only to see their true impact emerge during the editing process. While he couldn’t divulge specific details, Momoa marveled at the transformative power of editing, recounting instances where actors who seemed to struggle on set ultimately delivered outstanding performances once the final edit was complete. This experience led him to appreciate the significant role editing plays in shaping the overall impact of a film.
Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom hits theaters on Dec 20, 2023.
