“Those kids don’t know what the word means”: Shakira’s Scathing Barbie Review Comes Back to Bite Her Back After Singer Calls Feminist Movie ‘Emasculating’
Not all movies can be everyone’s cup of tea. This can be because people resonate with different themes and feel pulled towards diverse topics. It’s proved true with Shakira sharing what her young sons thought of the blockbuster movie Barbie. Greta Gerwig’s directorial project starring Margot Robbie became the talk of the town with incredible reviews from both the audiences and critics. However, it seems like Shakira and her sons did not agree with the movie.
Shakira Shares Her Son’s Opinion on Barbie
Shakira has been through a lot. Her recent divorce from footballer Gerard Pique came as a shock to everyone who thought they fit together so well. However, Shakira chooses to conjure melodies and heartfelt musical compositions out of the pain and hurt she suffered. They have two sons who the couple’s separation has deeply impacted. In a recent interview with Allure, Shakira sheds light on how she has been coping and how her sons are doing.
When the interviewer asked her if she had watched the movie Barbie. Shakira’s response came after a long pause as if she wanted to choose her words carefully. She claimed that her sons did not like the movie at all since Barbie seemed to sideline Ken (or men) and redeemed the spotlight for herself. Things go awry when Ken discovers an outside world where the tables are turned and men reign society. Shakira claimed,
“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”
Shakira shares that the movie robs men of their purpose in society as Ken struggles to find his identity outside of being there for Barbie. Seems like Shakira’s son related to Ryan Gosling’s Ken and his plight of feeling neglected and ignored. However, they might have missed the entire point of the movie where Greta Gerwig wanted to show a utopia for women. In the fantasy land, they can thrive and feel empowered without any obstacles.
