Tom Cruise Didn’t Get Best Actor Nomination at Oscars 2023 Despite Top Gun 2 Co-Star Jennifer Connelly’s Pleas
Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick received a significant six Academy Awards nominations, even though the Academy did not give him a Best Actor nod. Unlike other well-known fellow actors like Johnny Depp, Edward Norton, and Angela Bassett—who have only received two nominations in 30 years—Cruise has never received any Oscar.
Top Gun: Maverick was included in the Academy’s list of 10 Best Picture nominees, earning the 60-year-old his fourth career Oscar nomination for his work as a producer on the blockbuster sequel. It has earned close to $1.5 billion thus far. Many viewers, however, believed Cruise had a good chance of finally taking home the Best Actor award following the success of the sequel movie Top Gun: Maverick. However, he received zero nominations.
Even his co-star Jennifer Connelly now thinks that the Oscars overlooked the talented actor. Cruise “absolutely deserves” an Oscar, according to Connelly, who spoke with Variety in a recent interview.
Jennifer Connelly Thinks Tom Cruise Deserves an Oscar
Jennifer Connelly played ‘Penelope Benjamin,’ a badass bar owner who has feelings for Tom Cruise’s character Maverick in Top Gun, one of the most cherished movies of 2022. As a potential dark horse contender for best actor at the Oscars, Connelly told Variety that Cruise’s nomination would be well-deserved given the breadth of his on-set accomplishments.
According to Connelly, Cruise “absolutely deserves” an Oscar for his “extraordinary” portrayal of ‘Peter Maverick Mitchell’.
The actress who played ‘Penelope Benjamin’ said,
“He [Tom Cruise] does an amazing job in the movie. He’s extraordinary as a person and fantastic as an actor, and I think that he is just perfect. He embodies that character so beautifully, and I think he absolutely deserves it.”
According to the Labyrinth actor, it takes a lot of effort to produce a movie of that caliber. She also gushed about the chemistry between Miles Teller and Tom Cruise.
Of course, Connelly praised Cruise’s commitment, saying, “But the work he did to accomplish those flying sequences, it’s something else.”
The Academy held its yearly luncheon for this year’s nominees in Beverly Hills, California, in February 2023. In the course of the ceremony, Cruise, who is nominated as a producer for Best Picture contender Top Gun: Maverick, transformed the ballroom into his own meet-and-greet for the other nominees.
Tom Cruise skipped the 2023 Oscars!
Despite the fact that his movie, Top Gun: Maverick, earned six awards, including Best Picture, the 60-year-old star reportedly skipped the annual ceremony, which took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday.
The actor reportedly told Entertainment Tonight that he is away filming Mission: Impossible 8 at the moment, which accounts for his absence.
Top Gun: Maverick, starring Cruise as ‘Pete Maverick’ Mitchell, a resurrected test pilot, and U.S. Navy captain who must confront his complicated past as he commands a fresh squadron of Top Gun alums into the air. The film follows the events of the original film. Aside from that, the sequel to 1986’s Top Gun received 2023 Oscar nominations for Best Writing, Original Song (Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand), Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound.
Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s most well-known actors, but despite his long career, he has never received an Oscar. He has so far been nominated twice for Best Actor for the film, Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, as well as once for Best Supporting Actor for the film Magnolia.
Top Gun: Maverick is the fourth film for which he has been nominated, though it is for Best Picture.
