Top Gun: Maverick Beats The Dark Knight’s Domestic Box-Office Total
Top Gun: Maverick has resumed its flying run at the box office as the Tom Cruise starrer has now surpassed The Dark Knight, in terms of the domestic box office total.
Released exactly after 36 years of the original Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick sees star Tom Cruise reprising his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. He trains fighter pilots for a new generation for an almost impossible task.
Top Gun: Maverick Was Set For A 2020 Release
Top Gun: Maverick was originally set for a release two years back, the movie got delayed, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and after two years of worthy waiting, the movie was finally released in theaters on May 27, 2022.
Waiting for the pandemic to cease appeared to be the perfect choice as Top Gun: Maverick broke the Memorial Day Weekend box office record that was earlier held by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End for 15 long years.

Top Gun: Maverick has resumed doing exceptionally well within these weeks, coming at number one for about two weeks straight, holding its own in the top five against some really major competition from Lightyear, Jurassic World: Dominion, and Minions: The Rise of Gru. Top Gun: Maverick has surpassed $1 billion worldwide and has gone to become Tom Cruise’s most-grossing film ever, and it has no signs to stoop here.
Maverick’s Total Stands at $545 million
As per Variety, Top Gun: Maverick was at the second spot at the weekend box office, grossing $25 million in its sixth weekend of release with a drop of only 14%.
If we believe box office tracking site The Numbers, the domestic box office total now stands at $545 million, and Top Gun: Maverick’s domestic box office total is at $545 million which means it has surpassed both The Lion King ($543 million) and The Dark Knight, which was at $533 million. With this, Top Gun: Maverick is now the 12th highest-grossing box office movie, not adjusted for inflation.
However, Top Gun: Maverick is the highest-grossing film of this summer of 2022 and also happens to be the highest-grossing film of 2022 in total, surpassing films like The Batman and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
