Nic Pizzolatto reveals he was nearly brought to tears by his characters
During an interview with Bernard Strainchamps over a decade ago, Nic Pizzolatto spoke about his novel Gavelston. The thriller has two main protagonists and in order to bring his best work out, he had to go to some really dark places mentally.
While speaking about it, Pizzolatto revealed that he understood that he needed to feel the weight of the characters and as a result, he was nearly brought to tears. He said:
“Structurally it was simply a matter of hearing what needed to be said. What was most difficult was to feel the weight of the characters’ lives, their desperation and loneliness, and their mutual hauntings. The characters took me back to places I don’t often allow myself to go, and I’d find myself stunned into silence or on the verge of tears because of what I’d felt on their behalf. Somewhat like an actor when playing an emotionally wrenching role.”
That said, it was certainly a emotional roller coaster for Pizzolatto to work on Gavelston but it most certainly paid off pretty well as it was later adapted into a movie as well.

The fourth season of True Detective was released recently on January 14. With a lot of anticipation surrounding the new season, it’s worth noting that the show was set to release last year.
However, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike not only messed up the entire schedule of 2023 but also delayed the release of multiple shows and movies. True Detective-Night Country comprises of six episodes and will be aired on HBO at 21:00 ET/PT.
Moreover, the fourth season reportedly has a striking similarity with respect to the paranormal aspect of season 1. That said, it will be interesting to see if the fourth season can do as well as the previous seasons.
