Tom Cruise has been the flag bearer of the billion-dollar super spy franchise for more than a decade. The Mission Impossible franchise came up with its seventh installment in June 2023. Despite being one of the most anticipated movies of the summer of 2023, the Christopher McQuarrie-directed project failed to create an impact at the box office.

After the box office failure of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, the future of the eighth chapter lies in uncertainty.

Uncertainty Looms Over Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 2

According to the media outlet Deadline, uncertainty lies over the release of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 2 in 2024. This comes as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike which has not only affected the release of the movies but even led to the postponing of multiple movies and television series.

During an interview with Collider, Christopher McQuarrie spoke about the future of the eighth installment and even pointed out that the project is still under production. He said-

“All the interstitial stuff is shot. There are characters in the movie you don’t even know about yet. And I have one—how would I call it?”

He further mentioned-

“It’s a sidebar action sequence involving the team, which we haven’t shot yet, and that’s first up as soon as we get back. It’s involving elements that I’ve never worked with before. It’s a big challenge, and it’s a tight schedule. The plan to be wrapped for all principal photography is early next year.”

According to the reports, one of the most important reasons for the rumored delayed release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 2 is its vast schedule that spans multiple international locations, complex stunts, and detailed action sets along with the packed schedules of the actors makes it difficult to resume the production

The WGA and  SAG-AFTRA strikes have messed up the release calendar of 2023 drastically. The projects that were supposed to be witnessing their theatrical release in 2023, have been pushed to 2024, affecting the release schedule of 2024.

Why Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 7 Bombed At The Box Office?

Despite having a crazy fan following across the globe, Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One fell flat at the box office. The spy action drama was released on July 12, 2023, whereas Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie saw their theatrical release on July 21, 2023. The dual release of the biggest blockbusters of 2023 not only brought Mission Impossible 7 to the third spot at the box office but also went on to create multiple records.

Margot Robbie-led Barbie has already set a great example with respect to its marketing and promotion. The American doll manufacturing company Mattel and WB’s marketing strategy went on to paint almost every part of the world pink. Barbie went on to enter the billion-dollar club within a month of its release, leaving behind the magnum opus project of Christopher Nolan.

Maximum IMAX theatres were assigned to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer after playing Tom Cruises’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One for almost a week. This played a very significant role in the failure of the Tom Cruise-led project.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 2 is supposed to hit the theaters on June 28, 2024.
