The People’s Choice Awards nominees have been announced today:
The candidates for the People’s Choice Awards were unveiled today, and MCU projects received 21 nods, dominating practically every category in which they were eligible. After the pandemic shut down theatres just before Black Widow was set to start off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2020 became the first year since the franchise’s inception to be wholly empty of an MCU film. Marvel, on the other hand, returned with a vengeance in 2021. Marvel has ruled the movie office, with Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Five Rings shattering global profit records and topping the domestic box office at #2 and #1, respectively. They are also both ranked in the top ten in the world, at #7 and #8. Marvel has also launched a series of popular live-action streaming episodes on Disney+, beginning with WandaVision in January. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki followed, with Hawkeye expected to air in November.
As Per Deadline, The Nominees Are:
The nominees for NBC and EChoice !’s People’s Awards were announced today, according to Deadline. Nominations for Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Loki, WandaVision, and Falcon & the Winter Soldier were also received. Some Marvel submissions, such as WandaVision and Loki, received four nominations. Marvel has dominated the list, with 21 total nominations across all MCU entries on the list. Loki received four nominations, including Show of 2021, Bingeworthy Show, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, as well as a nomination for Male TV Star for Tom Hiddleston, who reprised the character he established in 2011’s Thor and continues to portray in five subsequent films. WandaVision was also nominated for Show of 2021 and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, with Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness receiving nods for Female TV Star. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier wraps out the Disney+ efforts with a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show mention for Anthony Mackie, as well as a Male TV Star nod.
What Happened On The Film Front:
On the cinematic front, Black Widow and Shang-Chi were both nominated for Movie of the Year 2021 and Action Movie of the Year 2021, respectively. Florence Pugh and Scarlett Johanssen, who played superspy sisters Natasha and Yelena in Black Widow, were nominated for Female Movie Star and Action Movie Star, respectively. Simu Liu from Shang-Chi is nominated in both categories, as well as for Male Movie Star, and his co-star Awkwafina is nominated for Female Movie Star. This broad range of nominees demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that Phase 4 of the MCU is here to stay. Despite a lengthy delay and the loss of several important members of the original Avengers lineup, the Marvel films and television series continue to enjoy widespread success and appeal. This is great news for the vast slate of sequels, spinoffs, and TV renewals currently in the works, which will provide moviegoers with a never-ending supply of Marvel entertainment until at least 2024.
